Not to mention that there’s King Cake flavored everything now. Community Coffee in Baton Rouge even has a King Cake flavor now.

Fun fact, beads were made of glass up until the 80's or so and would often shatter (not very fun to catch). Some parades still do it, but it is rare.

It's called Mardi Gras because it's the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, when Lent begins, the 40 day fasting period before Easter. You'd get your last big meals in and clean out the kitchen before Ash Wednesday.

Fun fact: despite being a Catholic holiday with a creole/Cajun base, the biggest New Orleans Mardi Gras traditions, the Krewes and the parade floats, are a Protestant invention. The earliest Mardi Gras krewes (the first three being the Knights of Momus, Comus, and Proteus) were formed by anglophone Protestants. These groups continuously paraded for ~150 years and held eyes-wide-shut-style parties for New Orleans’ anglophone elite until New Orleans passed a law demanding that they racially integrate in the 90s. All three Krewes boycotted parading after this order from the city, even after it was declared unconstitutional. While the Knights of Proteus have returned to parading, the Knights of Comus & Momus both have receded into the background, instead only hosting private, invite-only parties/balls, and potentially using the Knights of Chaos as a front group for them to continue parading through.

Mardis Gras is a catholic holiday, in case you didn’t know, it’s called Fat Tuesday because Ash Wednesday is the next day. It’s a party before the abstinence of lent.

I see how you are. It started in the US in Mobile, Alabama. They are the ones that started it, the man that did was Joe Cain. They have the oldest Mardi Gras in our country. You can visit the grave of Joe Cain behind the downtown public library there. Mobile was the Capitol prior to the Louisiana purchase.

Mardi Gras was first observed when Mobile was a French colony, a century before the founding of Alabama. The first Mardi Gras celebration in America took place in 1703, when a group of French soldiers held an impromptu celebration in the settlement of Mobile

As a person who lives in New Orleans and was born here, Mardi Gras is cool and all but it’s annoying af.. so many shops get closed, you can’t drive anywhere cause of parades, you can’t order food, but at least I get a week off of school.

I'm sorry, but to be factual- It started in Mobile, AL, WHICH at the time, was the Capital of the the LA territory. That's why there's all the confusion so:
IT STARTED IN MOBILE, LOUISIANA TERRITORY so that should help with the confusion

So proud to be from a state with actual culture and history. It's an honor to be a Guidry.

I'm legitimately surprised any of the traditions carried over to any extent, that's awesome

This is very similar to carnival here in central Europe, they probably share a common ancestor😊😊
