Makes sense. I shot full manual for years because YouTube told me to shoot in full manual. Now, I’ve been doing events for about 5 years, I shoot everything in auto ISO or aperture priority. 9 times out of 10, exposure is where it needs to be, and for the odd highlight or dark backgrounds, exposure comp or manually taking over ISO for a sec will get me there. Gives me more time to focus on composing and looking for interesting things to photograph!

Love using a light meter especially when using multiple light sources! During my professional photography days, it also delivers an impression to your client that you know what you're doing with lighting because you skip the multiple "test shot" phase. For those who grew-up with film photography, test shots did not exist. A light meter was a tool I can't live without.

Two others from my experience.

First is night and dusk photography. You want manual everything here. Including lighting, meaning no TTL on strobes and speedlights since that could still put out so much light it turns your background completely black. And you do NOT want the camera trying to control the exposure when shooting outdoors at night. Because it absolutely will try to compensate for the ambient light, since... that's it's job.

Which, really, any place you do not want the camera's internal metering trying to control the exposure is where you want to be shooting manual mode and manual ISO.

Second is wildlife - presuming here you're using a lens with a 200mm or longer focal length. Here you want manual mode but auto ISO. And that's to keep a fast shutter speed (especially when using a long lens) and a good aperture (important for depth of field) to capture your subject, while letting auto ISO determine the exposure.

I will definitely look into getting a light meter.

Spot on. I still use mine and when I take out my Leica M2 and my Hassy I just enjoy being in the process.
Decades of experienced is a reality. I rather enjoy limiting my outings to 24 or 12 images

Replay gang 🔥ah no not on these one. I do have a question though. When i go on shutter or aperture mode i don't have access to the other setting, hence why i go on manual to have access to both. Am i missing something ? Otherwise for portrait in natural light, which mode would you choose ?

Hello Steve loving your tips and tricks on getting awesome pics. I have an issue when taking pics. I would take a pic horizontally, it would come out clean and clear. Then i would turn my camera vertically to take a pic, but it come out slightly darker. Why is that ?
As always keep up the great work🙂
