In this episode I return to Classic Engine Workshop in Worcestershire to see a beautiful 4.2 litre Series 1 E-Type engine they have freshly restored. It shows what the engine for PLF860E is going to look like after a full strip down and rebuild. It also gives us a chance to discuss the major engine components, what makes the XK such a great engine as well as sensible upgrades to consider during restoration.

The MEALER AUTOMOBILE when/IF or as it once was planned (to be manufactured) was going to primarily use a straight six based on the XK engine.... whenever a gasoline powered engine was used. This and the AMC 258 are in the top 10 best engines.
Your video was well made, informative and easy to watch. Thank You.

I've got a UK market rhd S2 coupe (fhc). Needs easy restoration but it's solid and matching numbers. Ran great before I took it apart. I've got a lhd fhc now and want to sell the dhc to a brit where it can be at home with it's right hand drive. It was owned by a USAF pilot who had been stationed in UK - he brought it back to the states and sold it to my father.

Great video! Thanks for making this. Do you know the height of the 4.2L engine from the bottom of the oil pan to the top of the timing chain covers? Hard to find that dimension. Thanks!

Every time I look at that beautiful engine, its beggars belief that Bill lyons authorised turning it into a boat anchor by reducing it to a 2.4 litre for the Mk 1s and 2s.Lunacy. No point in highlighting the obvious reasons.

Virtually Every 3.8 and even More so 4.2 engine cracked their Blocks.
Not easy to fix without Liners being fitted which is Expensive and Not a 100% fix... All bleats notwithstanding.
But for Shopping uses... Good 'nuff.

He's wrong about the rod bearings ! The rod and rod cap hold both the two bearing shells around the crankshaft and are only tightened enough to still allow the crankshaft to rotate smoothly, the little protruding tabs on the shells are there to keep the shells from rotating in the rod, if they rotate in the rod the oil passage holes in the shell and the rod would be misaligned and that would stop the lubrication to the rod, and the bearing would wear out rapidly and fail possibly causing the rod to break and/or damage to the crankshaft. SO THATS WHAT THE SHELL TABS DO CLOWN.
