Defunct Games reviews Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, available now on PlayStation 4. (Also available on Nintendo Wii U, 3DS, Steam and Xbox One.)

At long last, PlayStation 4 owners have a chance to discover WayForward's 2014 platformer, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse. With charming visuals, sharp writing and a lot of intricate dungeons to overcome, this throwback action game is still worth playing. Too bad the adventure all but ignores Shantae's genie half in favor of the usual Metroidvania-style upgrades.

On the half-genie side comment, sorta gets knocked out because Risky took her powers and genie status, so I"m not sure what you could have done there. Combat wise, they could have done more, but honestly, I found the enemy placement to take place of more complicated mechanics at times, but there definitely were some dungeons that combat got way too repetitive in.

How did you play this with that horrible input lag? You need to push the buttons about a second early to hit anything 🙈

If I remember correctly she lost her half genie powers in the 2nd game.

I’m about 55% through this game and while I really enjoy the exploration side of things, I can’t stand the combat at all. It’s annoying and repetitive, and the enemies are more frustrating than traditionally challenging
