The only mainland US casualties of WW2 was nearly an entire family having a picnic. Only the father survived the incident

The military response came on April 18th of that same year, when the Doolittle Raid made it clear that the Japanese islands were equally vulnerable.

The paranoia that followed spawned the John Belushi comedy “1941”.

There's a story floating around that the attack was revenge on part of the I-17s captain. Before the war allegedly while touring the facilities, he fell in some cactus and felt humiliated by the workers.

My grandmother told of those balloon bombs that the Japanese sent aloft on the wind currents to America. There were deaths caused. Most were destroyed. And some have been found decades later. There may still be some in the uninhabited forests; etc. even up in Canada. If you happen upon one the bomb can still be dangerous even after 80 yrs.

My dad was drafted for WW2. The first assignment he got was to sit around the Monterey area and keep an eye for any Japanese ships and watch for anything suspicious. Then after wards it was on to Africa.

A second IJN submarine shelled an Army coastal fort at night in Oregon. The sub spotted lights so presumed that was the fort's location. It fired a considerable number of rounds that destroyed the bleachers and concession stand at the fort's baseball park. The fort commander ordered the gun crews not to return fire to avoid revealing the forts location.

Wasn't this incident the basis for 1941, one of Steven Spielberg's few box-office bombs?

My grandpa was tasked with setting up a small Marine hq and monitoring the San Diego coast shortly after the Pearl attack. It didn't last too long but nobody knew if Japsanese had more attacks on the way.

The submarine commander was said to have been an engineer who worked there before the war.

It wasn’t about the oil refinery, it was about sending a message.

Of course, the message received was likely read something like “we don’t have the numbers or technology to launch an effective attack”

I wonder if they found and kept the shell that landed in the field?

I believe one of the rounds was a dud, maybe the one in the pasture. The authorities examine it, disarmed it and let the resident keep it. I saw an interview and the shell ....maybe on California Gold

Some old woodsman swallowed their compass. So they missed.

Reminds me of Spielbergs comedy movie, 1941. Hilarious!😂
