Should You Get Minty? A Linux Mint review.

This distro is dedicated to presentation of the things that make Linux Linux.

It's not cleanly built, like Ubuntu is, but its rough edges are not noticeable on hardware put together within the past 5 years or so.

The community is possibly the best in the business at helping new users. I don't like them personally, because unlike the Ubuntu community, they aren't open to helping with more advanced concepts and projects - like bootstrapping, or customizing a USB stick, or things like that.

Because most people are new, and need to be kept focused on how to figure out the small things - the problem I have is actually a blessing to the new user.

Unlike Ubuntu, the desktop environment for Linux Mint is designed as a comfortable place to live - where Ubuntu is designed to help you transition to a Linux workstation workflow.

Many people find it very comfortable to live in forever, and they settle down with Mint running the Cinnamon desktop.

As a tinkerer, who sees my computer and my networking as a hobby, and an opportunity to hone my CS skills - I don't like Linux Mint.

Those same qualities that make me NOT like Mint, make it one of the first distros I recommend to people who are new, or who want their computer to play nice with them.
