A Bit More History of North Shields | Smiths Dock , Ferry Landing and Wooden Doll.

I decided to go for a little stroll around the fish quay again today. This time starting at the entrance to Smiths dock next to the North Shields ferry landing and then walk along to the fish quay and up the stairs I mentioned in the last video.
Sorry about the quality of the audio as the wind was strong and then my pocket cam ran out of battery so I had to use my phone.
Anyway I hope you enjoy my little stroll around the oldest part of North Shields and rhanks for watching.

Thanks for sharing this video Dave. It reminds me of my home town of Barry in South Wales. The Docks were built in 1884 to serve the burgeoning coal mines of the valleys with massive exports via the railway to ship network. My grandad told me that in the boom years, you could walk from one side of the dock to the other across ship to ship. When I was young there were very few ships using the docks as the heavy industries of South Wales closed down. Now most of the land is housing and supermarkets. Sad really and sounds quite similar to the story of North Shields. Keep producing the videos. Haydn

Thanks for the tour Dave. Northumberland Sqr looks nice. Same in Glasgow. When I left school in '69, both sides of the Clyde were ships as far as the eye could see. Now it casinos, hotels, luxury homes, SSEC, and the list goes on and on.

Hi Dave, You forgot mention the Jungle Bar, the most famous club in North Shields, it was a place where foreign sailors frequented in the late 1950- 60's and picked up prostitutes. further along beside Smiths docks was Minnie Becks pub a landlady who was murdered there. The Police Muster rooms where naughty boys were sentenced to work on a prison ship called the Wellesley.1868- The original was set on fire and they brought another ship and renamed her The Wellesley. The conditions were horrific as these young boys were beaten and half starved. I think you should do a bit of research which will give you more info about North Shields. The Tiger Stairs was where they filmed for the movie "Women in Love." Starring Oliver Reed and Alan Bates. at the top of the stairs further along was "Staggie's." which was a second hand outlet which sold everything from spectacles to false teeth. "Regs and Woollens" he used to shout as he rode around the cobbled streets on his horse and cart. Houses on Liddell, Clive, Bird, Trinity, and Thrift Streets they were regarded as slums and they demolished because the children were dying from diseases from poor sanitation. and in 1948 families were moved to the new Estate called The Ridges. I was born there in 1956 and lived in North Shields until 1978 when I moved to Wallsend. The Stairs what you talked about was where I sprinted up about twenty times when I was boxing from 1967-1986. a training ground for many boxers. At the bottom of Howard street they filmed "When the Boat Comes in."

I worked in south shields once when i young, and the place i was staying the landlord said something about going through the tyne tunnel into north shields cos that's where all the best girls are all your get here is domino players🤣interesting video thanks mate take care

Dave the audio is terrible on this video, you need to get an external mike with a muffler on to cut the wind out 👍🏻
