Is the Panasonic Lumix G9 WORTH Buying for 2019?!

Let's find out if the Panasonic Lumix G9 is worth buying for 2019! This year has been a rollercoaster ride for video cameras, some serious heavy hitters were released this year that will absolutely last for the next several years.

In those releases however was this unassuming camera that almost never gets mentioned even though its one of the best cameras released this year. For its price and features nothing else on the market really comes close but lets find out if its actually still worth getting as an online content/youtube camera!

Nice review, if anybody is looking for settings that give great out of camera video, try these (obviously a personal choice):
Hit the Menu/Set button and tap on the video icon.
- AFS/AFF to AFS
- Continuous AF ON
- Photo Style to Custom with Contrast 0, Sharpness 3, NR 2, Saturation 2
- Highlight Shadow and adjust the lower curve to +1 and the upper to -1 (that is why I don't set contrast in Photo Style)
- i.Dynamic to AUTO (kicks in when there is too much dynamic range)
- i.Resolution to STANDARD (will use Photo Style setting for sharpness instead of an extra, sometimes over sharp, additional sharpening)
- Luminance Level to 0-255 (better dynamic range)
- Meter Mode to SPOT (Spot will meter on focus point, the other modes will meter on center of frame - see the background flare it causes near the window in video above!!)
- Shading Comp ON (gets rid of the lens distortion and vignetting - turn OFF for RAW photography)
- Diffraction Compensation AUTO (only applicable when using F12+ aperture)
- Stabilizer: Operation Mode to FULL SHAKE, E-Stabilzation OFF (can turn on for extra smooth video, but tears and punches in a bit), IS Lock ON (OFF if trying to pan smooth)
- Mic Level adj -12
- Mic Level Limiter ON

With AF Continuous set in the menu, only a MF setting on the focus control switch will over-ride that. As for focus mode, if something was going to remain in the center of the screen I would use "Custom Multi" with a 7 x 5 center cross (ie like walking and talking to camera or seated with camera pointed at you), if something was going to be in frame but moving around the whole frame (like walking and talking, but moving your face to the edge of the frame to look over shoulder at surroundings) I would set standard tracking (not face tracking) and if a person was going to be jumping in and out of frame I would use face/eye tracking.

Panasonic more features into a camera than any other manufacturer, plus they are generally very likeable in the hand. Unfortunately Sony manages to suck most of the vlogger promotion excitement out of the air and great cameras like the G9 get overlooked. I love MFT as a video format - it is similar to a high quality 16mm film camera, and back in the day, the 35mm crowd used to look down their nose at the Bolex crowd, but ultimately, there was always more footage shot on 16mm than on 35, especially for documentary and events. Despite constant doom and gloom from a certain section of the YouTube community, there are one heck of a lot of content creators who love their MFT, and especially Panasonic video capabilities, and video is thefuture.

The easy work around for contrast AF is just get some deep face tattoos. You won’t lose focus if you look like a zebra who made poor life choices.

I have a G9 to go with my Gh5 and love both. As you say the video quality from the G9 is brilliant and is a great B camera to my Gh5. Love both to bits. Probably find myself using the G9 more than the GH5.

Questions:
Did the G9’s autofocus get better significantly better with the most recent update? The GH5 and GH5S really got much better with the new 2.4 firmware. Did the G9 benefit from that? You mentioned it at the end but how much better is it?

Second: the GH5 and GH5S screens dim after a few seconds of recording 4K. Does the G9 screen dim as well? It’s not a setting you can change on the GH5

Actually the G9 is a bit underrated but is actually really good. i tested this with the Pana Leica 100-400mm vs. the GH5 with the same lens. the G9 handled the shake much better than the GH5 on the tele end.

I have an Olympus OMD 5ii and hope it never breaks for good. I follow Panasonic though and will own one some day I'm sure. I hope MFT goes on forever. Got the Panasonic 20ii for Christmas. Might get backup Panasonic camera for back up soon. Glad you are a fan of MFT and get enthused about it. If your setting are good you can get great shot with MFT even in low light. These cameras are powerful. 1 inch sensors are dam good and MFT is even bigger.

It’s in my hand right now, own it for 6 months. It produces awesome still and video quality . No Log profiles but not necessary for me as run and gun shooter. Love it. G9 fans. Cheers for a great content. 😄🤙🏼

Retiring the Z6 for the gh5??? My a7iii the mic jack died on me, and I need to send it for repair, I purchase a a6500 as a b camera for work, in $900 with two Sony oem batteries. Pretty good condition. So let’s see
