Not sure how to install piston rings? Al will walk you through how to install piston rings with and without a set of piston ring expander pliers. Finally he talks about clocking the ends of the pistons to avoid blow-by and loss of compression.

Piston Boss runs parallel to the crank ...Top ring: 10 clock, Second ring, 2 clock, oil control rings 4 o clock & 8 o clock..Use a compression tool to collapse rings when installing piston in bore, Lightly oil the piston skirt, and put the motor together like your operating on an open heart patient. Don't forget protectors on the Rod Bolts, as you tapping the piston into place. Bearing lube ...keep mating surfaces of the rod cap and big end clean and dry. Thin oil on the threads only when torqueing together. Experience...6 motors a year, almost 35 years. 2 failures. 1 455 Old's dropped a valve, 1, 454 Chevy valve spring bound up, hung a valve, lunched motor...Both motors in Go Fast Boats...Not a bad record. Tom Harrison, Pin position the first thing I noticed. Go back to school Summit Boy!!

Confused. How is the wrist pin not pointed front to back? Here you have contradictory info; perpendicular to wrist pin facing the back of the engine...

Damo B is correct. The wrist pin should follow the direction of the arrow. Other than that, the illustration is correct.

Rings setting is wrong, 180 is the best way no blow by or back pressure.

If you line both of the up, you will have blowby and lose compression, top ring should be on the back of the piston and the bottom towards the front on the engine

The expander pliers might work on big pistons, but when you work on small engines like motorcycle, pulling that gap wide enough to slip down over the piston almost always breaks the ring on the opposite side.

I have a question I just put a 350 Chevy to gather and I set my oil rings at 3 and 9 and my compression rings at 12 and 6 will this be OK just wandering I heard other people say they have set them up like this

Helpful video, but you should really clear up your confusion between perpendicular and parallel.

May over many years experience and learn from my master, 2 compression ring cross and 2 oil ring same as cross. Always best practice to use top of piston "X" orientation. Thanks.

i think that he installed the oil ring by wrong way, if you look the edges you will see that they are up.(video 1:55)

Dankie/ Merci Summit Racing for this educational video. Can the oil rings be up-side down? There is no makings on the oil rings? So there is no top or bottom side? And for especially for motorbike engines! Thx.

Why not put compression rings on opposite side of each other ?
