2022 MASTERPIECE GOTHIC CROWN 1 oz GOLD PROOF
Показать описание
Considered a Masterpiece of Gothic Revival Artistry. William Wyon is regarded as 1 of history’s greatest coin designers, his early work was synonymous w the Neoclassical (which looked to ancient Greece & Rome for its stylistic cues) So, his design for the 1817 Crown was something of a radical change of direction, because its a work of Neo-Gothic art influenced by medieval aesthetics
Perhaps Wyon’s studies of medieval poetry for his 1839 ‘Una & the Lion’ had set him on this path, or perhaps it was the Gothic Revival architecture of the new Palace of Westminster being built just along the Thames from his desk at The Royal Mint. Whatever it was that influenced him, the 1847 Crown represents another landmark in William Wyon’s remarkable career.
Queen Victoria loved Wyon's work because she thought he QUOTE "always represent me favorably”. The 1847 ‘Gothic Crown’ was a work of high art, created in a popular new style. The original issue was limited to only 8,000 pieces, making it highly coveted by collectors but usually beyond the reach & means of all but a fortunate few. The East India Company made this available to ONLY 200 people.
The REVERSE shows the original Gothic Crown.
In the middle, we see the Order of the Garter arms
which represents an English Chivalric Order from 1348.
Surrounding this Cruciform are 4 shields inspired by the Royal arms.
The backdrop consists of floral patterns = symbols of England, Scotland, Wales, & N. Ireland
AROUND the rim is a Latin inscription
MEANS = May God Guard these United Kingdoms, Year of Our Lord 1847
Limited edition of 200 💜Silver 5 oz ED 300 💜1 oz = 2000
I purchased this directly through The East India Company
