97 Books I Sunday on 60 Minutes

Scott Pelley reports on the battle to ban 97 books in one South Carolina public school district and the role played by the national movement for “parental rights” inspired by a group called Moms for Liberty. Sunday on 60 Minutes.

"60 Minutes" is the most successful television broadcast in history. Offering hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments and profiles of people in the news, the broadcast began in 1968 and is still a hit, over 50 seasons later, regularly making Nielsen's Top 10.

I have a real problem with the idea that parents can determine "everything" that their child can read and learn about in school. This idea that parents "own" their kids is kind of absurd idea. A school library should be an open place where knowledge and many kinds of literature are shared. I don't think that parents have the right to keep their kids from learning about evolution, black history, other religions, philosophy, etc.

As a parent you can tell your child your own viewpoint, but do you really want to control everything they think, feel, and see? If you do think you should control your child, you are eventually going to lose your relationship with them. Being that much of a control freak will never go well.

Can you talk about banned books in prison and why they are banned

Scott Pelley. Does not show any of the content in the books being contested. Why? He does not allow the banning side to speak without a narrative voice over. He does not bring up the age of the kids involved. He interviews only one book evaluator that actually works for the school which is a biased position. No interview of a book evaluator picking the opposing view or a parent or parents. This type of reporting is what is destroying trust in the media. He carved out the result he wanted and presented it as if he's neutral.

The most important thing about a 30-second 60-minute segment like this is to hear what isn't being said (LOL). What I heard is there are obviously many people -- who never had kids and wish to express their 'how' -- not 'why' -- to raise kids, because people say that by experiencing the 'why' -- many more might appreciate parental values.
Almost all wars are conflicts over values.

As a retired teacher, I can assure you there are sexually explicit books in our schools. Oftentimes when I would read one on one with a student, they would be too embarrassed to read the passage to me, and vice versa.
