The wake-active serotonergic raphe have been considered part of the ascending arousal system that promotes wakefulness. Using zebrafish and mice, the Prober and Gradinaru labs at Caltech demonstrate that the raphe promote sleep, potentially by generating homeostatic sleep pressure during wakefulness.
