People in Aurora, Illinois are making an effort to put the city on a positive course. To many, east or west doesn’t matter anymore. As people in Illinois have struggled to get by, there is understanding that ultimately – regardless of race or class or zip code – residents in Aurora largely have many similar dreams.

The Latino community has been a major driving factor in “rebuilding” Aurora. The homes, the yards, the neighborhood markets have all been refurbished. The east side, which back in 2000; and beyond, was in poor shape. Rundown neighborhoods everywhere.
Not so much any more. Our Latino brothers and sisters have taken pride in it, and it shows. Gracias! Trabajo bien hecho!

Aurora is really like 3 different cities. There is the far east side that is more upscale it's like a poorer version of Naperville. There is the west side which is pretty mixed now and then there is the near east side which is pretty much a Hispanic community. They are all one city, but it's like three cobbled together. The real reason anyone would want to move to Aurora is it's one of the more affordable suburbs to live in. They have been trying to revitalize the downtown area and maybe finally starting to have some results, but still a lot of empty buildings.

I’m from the west side of aurora. Most of my family is from the east. Personally, I do think Aurora is forgotten. Everyone knows Chicago and Naperville sometimes even sandwich for it’s fair but aurora is special in a way. We’re all diverse and sure, the rivalry is there but we’re still one city, and one city alone.

Like most small and large diverse cities of America's Rust Belt, Aurora has confronted significant economic challenges in the last couple of decades. Yet, its government and community members have remained steadfast in maintaining its infrastructure: relatively new Fox River bridges, Ohio and Wood Street Bridges, new annexes and remodeling to many of its schools, new development in its downtown core, new library, and so on.... Thanks be to its courageous local government leaders working together with its constituents to move Aurora forward.

I would never say Aurora is forgotten. We have a strong and diverse community and while we are overlooked by surrounding communities, we stand strong as individuals and as a family. Many local businesses exists, Hispanic, black, white, asian, and more. We come from different backgrounds and many far away places but together we are Aurora.

Ugh I miss Aurora! Grew up there in the late 2000s. My grandma always used to take me to the Dairy Queen on Lake street.

I live 1 town away and honestly never noticed the West side being any better than the East. I always thought Naperville was the rich side.
