Okay every. Let's give you more information
1. the eggs and the device were both at room temp
2. the instructions say to put it in the water with the eggs and NOT wait for boiling
3. soft boiled eggs have loose egg whites and runny yolk but not clear egg whites which means it was undercooked.
I hope this clears up all your theories on why this one didn't work. How about it doesn't work on soft boiled eggs and it works on hard boiled eggs. How about that being true. Anyone?

I have one and had same problem but im wondering if it makes a diffrance if eggs came out of fridge or room temp worth a try of both ?

You should keep your egg tester in the fridge along with the eggs... Works like a charm for us

For years I struggled with making hard boiled eggs until I ran across this recipe:
1. Put all of the eggs in a pot.
2. Fill with water until all the eggs are submerged.
3. Bring to a full boil and then shut it off.
4. Leave the eggs sitting in the water for 20 minutes.
5. Drain the water and then add cold water and let sit for 20 minutes.
Or do what I do, make them in the morning and just let them sit until I come back around lunch time.

Jack did you read the directions? You're supposed to leave your eggs out before you boil them to have them at the same temperature to start, or alternatively put the egg timer in the fridge with the eggs

Is this an American made product because in Japan that is their version of a soft boiled egg. The whites are runny and fall apart exactly like that.

Soft-boiled: Uncooked
Medium-boiled: Soft-boiled
Hard-boiled: Hard-boiled

Would the size of egg alter the result? Medium to Large to Extra large? It might be that particular egg timer is calibrated for medium sized eggs? Were I to try the experiment I might try it with varying sizes. Though to be fair, if it is calibrated for a particular size, it should have indicated such on the packaging.

Did you use refrigerated eggs? I always let my eggs come up to room temp before boiling. I think it would have worked better with room temp eggs. Or, as some comments have suggested keep the timer in the fridge with the eggs.

I have the same Egg Timer and works fine for me, different results than you have. Im in the UK, so maybe our eggs are different, who knows!

I was told by friends to have the device in the fridge along with the eggs this way it works better. I got to say it worked out better for me.

I use the tool all the time, depends on the size of the egg though.. mine is for medium eggs and when I use large eggs I know I need to boil them a bit longer.. guessing that's what happened with your eggs
