Delta Nestou

Yunanistan'da, LIFE PRIMED esas olarak Nestos nehrinin son bölümünde yaklaşık 40 hektarlık bir pilot alana odaklanmaktadır. 234 km uzunluğundaki Nestos Nehri, Rila Dağları'ndan (güney Bulgaristan) yükselir ve Trakya Denizi'ne dökülür ve kuzeydoğu Yunanistan'da Makedonya ve Trakya Bölgeleri arasındaki doğal sınırı oluşturur. In Greece, LIFE PRIMED mainly focuses on a pilot area of ​​approximately 40 hectares in the last section of the Nestos river. The 234 km long Nestos River rises from the Rila Mountains (southern Bulgaria) and empties into the Thracian Sea, forming the natural border between the Macedonian and Thrace Regions in northeastern Greece. Before the main river reaches the sea, it spreads over the coastal plain of Chrysoupolis, where it forms a fan-shaped delta system, the Nestos delta, with freshwater lakes and ponds. The delta formed by the river's alluvial deposits covers an area of ​​approximately 55,000 hectares, from the bridge near the town of Toxotes (the northernmost point) to the shore opposite the island of Thassos (the southernmost region). The eastern side of the delta reaches the Avdıra lagoons. On the west side, there are nine more lagoons instead: Vassova, Erateino, Agiasma, Kokkala, Haidefto, Keramoti, Gefyraki, Palaias Koitis of Nestos and Monastiraki. The lagoons are surrounded by extensive salt marshes and are home to the most productive fish farms in Greece. The nearest cities are Xanthi, 16 km to the east, and Kavala, 25 km to the west.
