The steady drumbeat is an authentic carryover from the days when Sea Shanties were sung by sailors working together on tasks such as trudging up the deck in line as they pulled up the anchor by brute force. It gave them common pace and the harmonies (when successfully achieved) helped them forget how tired they were. Manpower was the only way to weigh anchor through the 1800's (19th Century) and on many older ships into the early 20th Century.

I remember that episode in SeaQuest DSV (scifi show from the 90s)in which the SeaQuest is dead in the water and everything has to be done manually because the computers aren't working.... Suddenly in a calm and somber scene the oldest man serving on board the submarine, Chief Crocker, starts singing "Drunken Sailor" and everyone joins in one by one... One of my favorite scenes in the scifi-television.
