Asus x550 SSD+HDD upgrade

This is not a full tutorial!! If you try this and you don't know what you are doing don't blame me for screwing your device!!

This type of upgrade can be made on any laptop that has an optical drive.

Laptop configuration:
Asus X550LB-XX021D
Intel® CoreTM i5-4200U 1.60GHz, Haswell
nVidia GeForce G740 2GB (GK208, 64bit)
4GB Ram On Board
120gb SSD Kingston
750GB HDD Samsung
Second hdd caddy 9.5mm

Thank you so much for this video. I followed your video and i could easily install an SSD and modify my DVD Caddy to hold my old HDD. Now the OS boots up very fast and all my applications open up quickly, which is exactly what i wanted :)

+Илья Бессмертный It seems that i can't reply to your comment...again the "linked comment" thing. I didn't upgrade the ram on this laptop. Some user sad that 8gb is the max ram supported (4gb on board + 4 gb on the free slot) and some sad that 12gb are ok (8gb on the free slot + 4gb on board). I would have tested this but for now i don't have the money for this operation :)). If you make the upgrade you should stick with the on board ram frequency. The optical drive is 9.5 mm (check this video to see how you can measure it: 2nd hdd caddy size).

Hello. I don't know why, but it seems that i cannot answer to your questions directly (maybe you linked your comments to a social network or you have disabled the reply option). So...For the ram upgrade, i don't know the max ram size you can install, but other people i talked to, sad that 8gb work fine. The empty slot for ram is on my video at 0:18, see video with annotations on (I don't have a ram to make a tutorial about upgrading). For the SSD part and the operating system: your SSD will come with a cloning software and you will be able to clone your OS partition from the HDD to the SSD (if you really want to do this). After you successfully cloned the OS partition you can delete it from you HDD and use the clone from the SSD. Anyway my advice for you is to install a fresh copy of the OS on the SSD, it will perform better than your old OS from the HDD.

I have the same laptop and every time I try to install Windows 8 on a SSD, the BIOS doesn't recognize it and never boots to windows correctly. Can get to Windows eventually but constantly blue screens and returns to BIOS after sitting awhile.  However it boots fine when I use a regular HDD. Anyone else this issue?

I've successfully installed a HDD caddy and put in my old HDD with Windows 8.1. Everytime i reboot (only reboot!) my notebook the harddisk make weird noise (wirte-read-head?). Like fast power off/on the HDD. This dont happen when i shut down the notebook. Do you have a solution?
