I used the bard as a distraction so that astarion can put drow poison in their booze tub. As they fall dead from the poison and accused my bard, he pretended to be on their side still. Those who survived have half hp and easily put to sleep and assasinated.

yep I found that out with the bard too... works on LITERALLY EVERY non-aggressive creature.

they will gather around the bard as he plays a song.... and his team mates can set up the PERFECT ambush every time.

So.. the Bard is just a minor illusion spell that can play a guitar..?

What does playing an instrument actually do in the game?

You don't have to be a Bard, you just need to learn how to play instruments. And, if you don't have the Performance Profiency, maybe find a way to have both Thaumaturgy and Guidance active (Shadowheart or Harper Amulet for the latter).
Withers seems to be the only one who remains completely unimpressed, and animals do not drop gold. Everyone else who is in hearing range and not currently a team member will come and listen... did this more for the fun factor and to "make people forget their sorrow for awhhile" and didn't even think of trying this in combat, but good to know. Not sure I will do this, seems to be a bit... dunno... but thanks for sharing. The situation may arise when I need this.

You just start performing, then when everyone is gathering around you enter into turn based mode, and throw hunger of hadar or some AoE spell like that lol
