Speech therapist here, bone conduction is a real thing.
We actually have 2 methods of hearing, our main method through the ear, and through a bone that's directly behind your ear. That's also how some deaf people are able to hear with cochlear implants.
When you have hearing problems, your doctor might conduct a so-called "Weber test" in which they hold a tuning fork against that bone and when you can't hear through that anymore, they will hold it in front of your ear to see whether you have a problem in conducting the sound or whether it is a problem with your sensitivity.

i have a pair of the bone conducting headphones from Shokz, they are pretty comfortable. and yeah, the whole idea behind them is to be able to listen to music AND hear your surroundings still and be able to converse.
