Hey Jon, We just had a meteorologist from NOAA visit our local EAA chapter here at KFKL. Among other topics we discussed was the proposed Privatization of NOAA. Whether we realize it or not, the Information ALL these other companies rely on is FREE to the public and them.

I'm a huge fan of windy. Even here in the predictably unpredictable ozarks it is usually accurate. I generally start there, get a big picture view and then back it up with an AWC brief.

Id also recommend the HEMS Tool, its used for helicopter air ambulance weather briefing and is fairly accurate, id also say it would be good for GA fixed wing as well. It show VFR, MVFR IFR, mountain obscuration, AIRMET's SIGMET's, METAR/TAF, and a whole bunch of awesome stuff :)

I used Winy for flying but I felt somewhat guilty because it is not a 'certified' tool per se :)

I used this app when getting my glider rating in NM where the winds can be pretty gnarly but was unaware that it offered multi-day ceiling models. This def looks more useful than prog charts or area forecasts. Thx!

Before a flight I monitored TAFs in my area and Windy. Windy was more accurate when it came to wind and wind gusts

It goes to show that one still needs to keep an open mind when it comes to flight planning, especially if it’s a NON-scheduled GA flight.

I do occasionally tag in WeatherTAP as well. (Subscription based, but that’s another topic for another day.)

It's an amazing app, especially outside of TAF predictions. I use the cloud base all the time. I still recommend all use the next gen view on leidos before I blast off. Set to desktop mode on the iPad, it's a great self brief once you figure out the inputs.

Thanks for your take on Windy.com Jon. It's an excellent and pretty accurate visual tool for pilots, and really easy to use. Also well used here in the UK.

The thing I really worried about was Thunder Storms in the summer and Ice in the winter. Otherwise if the destination was forecast at or above minutes (Depending on Recent flight experience too) it was a go on Instruments. Had to have an OUT at an alternate though.

Private parties look so much better. Aviation weather . gov looks like it hasn't been visually enhanced since the 19s.

Too bad one can't superimpose their route of flight on the wind charts or even multiple routes. Then you'd really have something.

How accurate is it outside of the US ?
