the r7 is not a replacement of the r6 but rather a bike to get a younger audience

these will sell like crazy, there's a huge gap in the lineup right now. so many people start out and want something more than a R3 and they look to the R6 and everyone is like don't do it you'll kill yourself get something more beginner friendly. by the time people are reasy for a R6 they make a jump to a R1 instead. MT07 power in a R6 like chassis is a homerun for the beginner market.
still glad i got a 2020 R6 though!

It's literally an MT-07 w/ fairings. Glad I went with the RS660, that thing is a blast.

It's called R7 because of displacement not that it's a performance increase over the R6. It compares more to the Ninja 650 more than the RS660. R3 =321cc R7=689cc. The R6 was introduced in 1999. The R7 has the same horsepower as the MT07 so that it didn't have to be recertified for emissions and the same basic engine could be used in all models.MT, XSR, Tracer and Tenere. The weight is more because, steel chassis with bodywork added. The price wouldn't be $7999 because of better adjustable suspension and body work. It doesn't have the electronics of the RS660 or R1 because it's throttle by cable not by wire to keep cost down.

Upgraded suspension is what I’m happy for and it looks spicy 🥵

I have a feeling this is going to be a popular stunt bike as the MT07 has been blowing up in the stunt scene. Even though people say “it’s a Mt07 with fairings” I think Mt07’s are super fun. The Mt07’s msrp is 7700 so for 1300 more you get a full fairing bike which I think looks better than the naked, you get upgraded suspension, better brakes, a better display, and a better clutch. In my opinion I think it’s worth it.

I'm kinda disappointed as it's got no more power than the an MT07 however if it sells like hot cakes I can imagine they will do the same trick with the MT09 and I reckon that would be the perfect sportdbike -120bhp triple with h Japanese reliability

When you talk about these bikes you HAVE to mention the Twin Cup Races.. It’s important. They’re calling it the R7 because they will be racing this bike in the Twin Cup against the RS660. They didn’t put the CP3 into this bike because it wouldn’t be able to compete in the Twin Cup. You mentioned the fully adjustable front suspension, the quick shifter and upgraded master cylinder.. so it’s NOT an Mt-07 dressed up.. hence the higher price tag. Also let’s not forget that this bike was developed SUPER quickly. I have no doubt that Yamaha is already working on dropping weight and adding horsepower for the refresh model. Now let’s discuss the death of the inline 4’s. It all comes down to money people.. there’s still people who love them and want to ride them but the cost of those bikes got ridiculous! Manufacturers had to make those bikes pass all sorts of emissions regulations and they were losing money trying to do so. The only way they could try to make so sort of profit was to jack up the prices of these bikes. New young riders can’t afford rent let alone a $12, 000 bike that cost $4, 000 a year to insure. That’s the only reason why those bikes didn’t sell and the reason why so many people are going naked.. it’s by default. Naked bikes are a 1/3 cheaper to insure over Super Sports.

I was really hoping that it would be the equivalent of the gsxr 750. Doesn’t seem like they wanted to compete with it.

I think the main reason for it is to fit the a2 category in Europe, but a bump up in engine power would have been nice.

The light in the middle really destroys the look. What were they thinking?!

Yamaha has patents for a R9 as well. Let's see if the R9 is what everyone wanted. More powerful than R6 but not than R1. Maybe it'll be a Panigale V2 competitor

Definitely should have come with 30+ more bhp race cams

The idea that "the R7 is an upgrade to the R6" is so short sighted.
The 600 class is failing, it's not making manufacturers money. The class is going away.
The R7 wouldn't be an upgrade, because the 600 class wasn't failing due to lack of horsepower. It was failing for lack of many other things.
Think of it this way: The YZF-R7 is the best SV650S for 650 twin-class racing that has ever been offered from the showroom, without a need to drop 2500 to get the chassis and suspension sorted. Yes I'm of the opinion it wouldn't have been a lot of cost involved in a bump of 2mm bore to 725cc, a bump in compression, more aggressive cams, and reconfigured balance shafts to make it run smooth. But perhaps in a few years Yamaha will deliver a marginally reworked R7 to keep interest, depending on how the class develops. I know the 650 twin racing classes will love it. I know the Isle of Man TT runs a 650 twin class, but heavily modified Kawasaki Ninja 650's.
The R3 has been out for a while, It's an R-bike and no one complained about that being a lower-powered twin with a raspy 180° firing interval.
If the mostly-new 890cc CP3 went into an R-chassis, it would be called a YZF-R9 following the MT-09 label (689cc is is R9).
Yamaha wasn't going to start a whole new model number identification coding. The MT has been their street bike series since 2014 (formerly FZ). The YZF class has been their racing bikes for a very long time, which has included the R3 without complaint. They do not, have not, nor will they classify cylinder count by model codes.

The R7 is not a let down. The parrots in the motorcycle community who want to be popular sharing unfounded opinions, those are the actual letdown.
