In today’s video we are building a $200 gaming PC featuring you guessed it, a Dell Optiplex! Today’s build is sporting the 5040 model, and of course we upgraded it with a GPU an NVMe SSD, and some spray paint action.

I recently put together the best price to performance PC I've ever built. It's got an Xeon E3 1230V2 ( i7 3770 equivalent ), 16GB DDR3, RX570, 1TB HDD, 120GB SSD and a 500w PSU all housed in a Oversteel Aeris case all for €245. Non-proprietary parts as well. Couldn't be happier with it.

Some people act like PC gaming is only the high end stuff, like having a 3080ti or something lol but really, I think these budget builds are way more impressive in a sense. I think it's amazing that through being frugal and re-using some used parts, you can create a build that's still sufficiently powerful and capable of playing modern games. You do a great job with these videos.

The paint trully makes it look like a modern case. Swap the side panel with some tempered glass (or at least plexi) after a few mods and you've got a killer case

Zach is truly a hero, pushing the limits for low prices on pc’s with acceptable performance for the mainstream people out here.

I was literally thinking the same thing. I think the higher core count CPU's have made the old i7 4 cores 8 threads, now the Ultra Budget Option. Why get one of these machines when you get build a 6 core system with a decent GPU for $500. You nailed it Zach!

Thank you for recognizing that you paid lower prices because of patience. For most people that should be common sense/a given, but it’s always nice to see that transparency

Do some PSU swaps on these and use older higher tier cards😉 It is always fun and a nice video for you!

For $160 I just build a PC with:
-AMD 4700s kit (16GB RAM)
-RX 550
-240GB SSD + 1TB WD Blue
I have a spare case with PSU.
Pretty solid performance for the price with all NEW parts.

For someone who only do browsing, play light gaming and old game, I like this kind of cheap build pc.
Thanks

A video on upgrading a prebuilt past the GPUs which need power from the powersupply and the complications and things to look out for would be great. Such things has PSU form factor, propriety connectors, slimline rather than standard DVD drive connectors etc.

just two years ago, the sweet spot was 30 bucks for the bones of a working system, like an optiplex 9020 on an intel 4th gen. You could hit basic vr, plenty of features to support gaming so long as you could get a passable used gpu, it was glorious. My first system was 30 bucks for a 7020 (i5 4590, 16gb of ddr3, and an ssd), about 50 bucks total for a case and psu swap, and about 100 bucks for a lucky ebay bid on a 1070. Even after I've upgraded, nothing beats that price to performance - and if I'd found a full sized tower, I wouldn't have even needed to swap the case and psu. My new system is way more useable, moved up to a 2011v3 platform with the total price now being around 350, and I love it, but the og platform was unbeatable for cost.

Really liking the benchmark games. I think they are a good swath of games that get a little bit of every type of game.

At our office they will throw a Optiplex 7040. I told them if I can have it. They gave it to me. I put a NVME, upgrade the RAM to 16GB and put in a RTX A2000 (refurb). Now it runs great. :)

But it's not just about power. I see people say "just get a console" all the time, rather than build a PC like this. But the problem with that argument is that your friends might not be playing on console, they game you want to play might not, or any number of other reasons. The fact is, they don't appeal to the same market if you really look into it, but there is a small amount of overlap. There are people that prefer one over the other regardless, and I feel like there is definitely a place for builds like this.

And I can't agree, at the right price, a 4th Gen i7 system is still relevant, regardless. But for the most part, either way... they're both pretty dead as far as upgrade path.

i love buying these used Optiplex computers. I bought a 9020 SFF on ebay for $69, it came with i7 4790, 16Gb RAM and Windows 10 Pro on a 500GB hdd. I cloned the hard drive to a 1 Tbyte SSD, added another one for automatic updating and another 16BG RAM. I will add a Radeon 6400 next for some light gaming. My next project will probably be an HP840 dual Xeon workstation, those were built like tanks. I always make them dual boot to Arch Linux for some more fun.

i recently put together a pc for less than £200. An Rx 460 and i5 7400 from a Lenovo v520. had to change the power supply and get an adapter cable but it works like a charm. all in the v520 case
