FREEZING GALE FORCE Winter Winds & Sub Zero Temperatures - Helvellyn Solo Wild Camp

Headed up to Helvellyn from the Thirlmere side at the Swirls car park. Up past Browncove Crags and on to the summit. Got pitched up in quite calm but misty conditions with temperatures hovering just above freezing. A really stormy night in the Hilleberg Soulo RL with constant winds recorded at over 40mph and 50mph gusts and temperatures of -10degC with windchill. I left the tent and headed up to the summit shelter for some relief from the wind. When I got there I met a young couple who had made it too the summit via Striding Edge but were then unable to get back down due to the strong winds, mist, and darkness, and made a call to mountain rescue. Three members of the MRT arrived a couple of hours later and walked them safely back to Glenridding. Morning sunrise was spectacular with stunning views of Striding Edge and the surrounding mountains. Winds were still constant between 25-30mph so I was unable to fly the drone.

A great solo trip though and certainly a test of both physical and mental resilience in such challenging conditions.

Big respect to the guys at Patterdale mountain rescue.
