MagicaVoxel 0.99.6.2 was just released and it's going to be the final release, at least for a while. The author is done for now, but hopefully comes back to it next year or beyond. That said, it's a very mature and feature rich voxel editor already!

This tool has one of the most productivity / work hour rate of all times.
Also, one of the flattest learning curves ever.
Also, it works and renders beautifully on the lowest end pc, fairly quick.

I've watched a million tutorials and wasted countless hours on Blender and I still have no idea what I'm doing. As someone who just wanted to get better at making my own 3D art for games, MagicaVoxel was a breath of fresh air. I haven't watched a single tutorial yet and I've made a few models just by playing around, it's so intuitive it's crazy.

On my linux distro, it's working like a charm with wine (ubuntu 20.04 LTS). No problems setting it up

These days, I find myself using this far more than I do any 'traditional' modelling software. It's easy to use but hides quite a bit of power.

I actually used it with wine it runs amazing on Ubuntu Linux and setting it up is easy.

But it still needs so many improvements, like decoupling color and material property and allowing transparent emissive materials for fire, needs a blur paint brush, needs to bring back the animation support, needs a way to add new colors to a pallete instead of forcing us to change a color, needs a way to work without a pallete, needs a way to desselect a blocks that were selected by mistake without having to start the selection from scratch every time, larger working volume, needs support for more types of perspective like reversed, antialising and better shading in editor perhaps RTX support and a full screen mode.

This reminds me; have you seen anything about the Atomontage engine? If you can, it might be worth a look. Not sure if you can do a video about it though. But, they do have videos up on YouTube demoing the engine.

this is my stress release go to software hahahahahaahah is very realxing... am just getting more and more involve with love this app!!! Am doing mini charters and righing them in blender. What a combo.

Doesn't have support for multiple "layers".
Models are shifted into corner coords only (you can't center at 0, 0, they go from 0, 0 to positive only).
Files are super heavy and unoptimized.
Renders invisible areas, like insides of objects.
Limited color palette.
Inverted axis, as in, if you write something in the voxels, when exporting to a game for example, it is inverted.

Fantastic program. I haven't used it in a while and it has improved dramatically. And it's free, which is amazing. After playing with this a bit today, I'd critique its export options. It would be nice to have an option to export only selected objects, or not to export hidden objects or hidden layers. If you have a dense scene of objects and export OBJs, you have to sift through a mess of files to figure out which file is what since they all share the same export filename with a number. (I thought there used to be an option to name each object, was this removed?) If the whole scene shares the same palette, all objects exported are exported with their own texture palette, slight waste there. Bottom line, GREAT for artists, but some unnecessary overhead and work involved for game developers looking to make a voxel game from this. GLTF support would be tremendous (+PBR materials, instanced objects, etc. Cut down the bloat & save some time).

You should do an update on Crocotile3d. Since your original video on it it got a couple of great features, several of which I've suggested myself.

In my experience MV does not export colors correctly, this is especially bad in the Godot engine. Just something to keep in mind.

One of the reasons why i abandoned MagicaVoxel before -
is because after exporting it, it still calculates the polygons/voxels beneath the surface / that fills the object.
The polygons the player in your game doesn't see are still live. Which is a major resource eater.
Anyone know if this problem has been resolved already?
