Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. Based on a true story, the film focuses on the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two-time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks, Best Actor, 1993, Philadelphia; Best Actor, 1994, Forrest Gump), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. The two men are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips’ unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.

Kathryn Bigelow won the Academy Award for best director for The Hurt Locker in 2009, and Ang Lee won it for Life of Pi this year, his 2nd Academy Award for best director in the last 10 years. I'd say they're pretty important.

I have actually seen and been in contact with somalian pirates, Yes they are Black. saying this historically accurate movie is racist is like saying any nazi movie is racist against whites. Kind of stupid right. It is just an adaptation of true event that will hopefully one day show our kids and grandkids what this generation went through.

Actually.. I know this comment is old but They did get somalian people to play the somalians.... Only 1 person did not come from somalia. (still not sure) Many are new actors. In fact I think they portrayed Phillips wrong, many of his crew members said that he was arrogant and self righteous.

Does this movie talk about how Philips took the ship closer to land and therefore increased the likelihood that this happened? IIRC, his crew is suing him for this reason.
