yes there are indeed movies I refuse to subject myself to, because I don't believe I have to in order to prove myself as a horror fan. we all have our limits, and there are a lot of movies in the horror genre for a reason: there's literally something for everyone.

what are some movies that you're afraid or just refuse to watch?

The “horror isn’t for you” comment is so pretentious and annoying. If you like horror movies, you’re a horror fan! You don’t have to like any specific film to call yourself a fan of the genre

I am not ashamed to admit I am scared to watch Cats (2019)

I'm a 50 year old male, with CPTSD, ADHD, and HSP, and I have been a horror fan since grade school. And I have my own boundaries and triggers. Some films, I wish I hadn't seen. Age, gender, has nothing to do with it. I dig your video. Consider me a new fan.

As a horror lover, and a rape victim, it makes me feel extremely uneasy seeing sexual violence in movies, particularly when it doesn't add anything to the story and is for shock value only. It feels like a such a cheap "thrill", and an incredibly overused one. This video legit made me feel seen and less alone 💞

Calling you "little girl" was just the perfect combination of creepy and condescending

“You can have anxiety and be a horror fan.” I’m a horror fan *because* of my anxiety.

I want every movie from now on to be rated by how much Snoop Dogg liked them.

I’m a woman who sometimes likes more extreme/shocking horror, including some of these movies, partly out of pure curiosity over the limits of art, and partly because it helps me deal with some of my anxieties and traumas in a controlled setting. BUT there’s absolutely no reason to say somebody HAS to like these movies or they’re not a real horror fan. Everyone has different boundaries and preferences. It’s fine and healthy to avoid things that make you uncomfortable! Like you said, we all like different things. Gate keeping over who’s a “real” fan of anything is the worst.

As long as you LIKE horror, you’re a horror fan. End of conversation.

The moment a man uses "little girl" in an argument.... it's over. He lost.

If Snoop Dogg says it's bad then there's nothing else to discuss 😔🤚

If anyone has as much morbid curiosity as I do about these movies but won’t watch them, SpookyRice has done summary movies about basically any disturbing film on this list. That way you can get a good vibe without sitting through them 🤙🏻💖

I literally refuse to watch anything with real animal cruelty, people eating feces and extended sexual assault scenes. I can't think of a good reason to have any of that. It just screams "Ooh look how edgy we are."

That guy calling you "vanilla" as he blatantly ignores your boundaries because that's what he thinks bdsm is

I'm a 53 year old male, love horror but can't watch torture or possession movies anymore. Something about having kids that changes your taste.

If you were wondering, ‘The girl next door’ was based off the case of Sylvia Likens. It’s similar to cases like Junko Furuta and Suzanne Capper, in that she was tortured for an extended period of time, and eventually killed.

This is why I Marie Kondo my movies. I look them up and ask "in the end, will this spark joy?"

My partner can't watch movies with sexual assault or rape scenes, and since dating them I've noticed just how often sexual assault is used in movies to get a cheap visceral reaction without actually having to write a good plot

This is why I love the movie Funny Games. It flips the mirror to the audience and pushed the question "why are you watching this and what are you hoping to see?". Alot of extreme horror fans don't like this movie because it purposely doesn't show alot of gore and doesn't contain any nudity when the female actress is in a comprising situation. It also gets flack for being long and a bit boring, but the whole point is to say "why would you want to see that? Why do you want to see her in this awful situation? Why do you want to see this family suffer? Why are you watching this?". Personally, I think it's one of the best thriller movies I've seen because it actually creeped me out and left me thinking after I turned it off, instead of relying on shock value and cheap jumpscares.

The only movie I've ever seen where the sexual assault was very graphic and gratuitous but also was very crucial to the whole message and point of the movie was Irreversible. As a gay SA victim, I appreciated the film for putting you in the shoes of the victim and their loved ones, instead of just throwing it in for a graphic reaction. Its a very powerful and super disturbing film, but it has a very strong and important message.

Edit: I really enjoyed Antichrist, even though the genital mutilation scenes were very hard to stomach. It's a film with a vague and complex lore around it, and Lars Von Trier always seems to make his films feel like completely different worlds even though they are set in our timeline, on Earth.

I feel kinda weird now knowing I have seen every single film on this list minus the last one, the last one was made with zero substance or message it is solely for getting a shocked and repulsive reaction out of it viewers. I actually enjoyed a few of them lol. I can enjoy a disturbing movie as long as I don't find it pointless, or I don't feel as though they are just making a film for shock value. Films like Antichrist, Irreversible, and Salo have scenes where the directors intended to get a visceral and shocked and disgusted response from the viewers but they also have deeper meanings in the film and the graphic scenes progress and push the plot and the ideas the director and film are trying to get across.

With Irreversible, I cried watching the scene where Alex is assaulted because it places the audience in her position of powerlessness and shock and pain. Irreversible proves to be both a scathing condemnation of how films have pornographically depicted violence against women and gay men and in turn, how our culture sexualizes women and victim-blames them when they are subjected to cruel acts at the hands of men. Or that's how I interpreted the film personally, and why I do place it very high on my favorite films I've watched.

I can't even begin to make an entire commentary on Antichrist or this already massive comment will be even longer, there's so themes and ideas happening in it. It's almost too busy, but somehow it pulls it together into an unforgettable cinema experience, though I could have gone without the scissor scene. (Even though it also has a meaning to tie in with the plot and commentary Von Trier is presenting) One of the main questions Von Trier presents within the film is, "Is there anything more frightening than the idea that mothers may wish to commit infanticide?" That's just one of the many things happening inside that film. Its super deep and analytic almost, that I can completely understand why it is a massively polarizing film and why some people will never like it.

Salo is basically a political statement about the power struggle that was happening in Italy during the 1940s. The film explores themes of political corruption, consumerism, authoritarianism, nihilism, morality, capitalism, totalitarianism, sadism, sexuality, and fascism. Once again, another film that can be broken down and studied and interpreted in various ways.

TLDR: Basically what I'm saying is that even though these films contain various scenes of SA and graphic violence and subject matter, they aren't meaningless, to me anyways. I found strong messages and themes in all of them, being a SA victim and a gay man, they struck various nerves in me that made me appreciate them, hard to watch as they may be. I'm not advocating them in any way, since I know many people will still be triggered or upset by them and completely respect their opinions and distaste of them, I just wanted to explain their meanings to people who may read this that have no desire whatsoever to watch them. :)
