Target Shooting Restrictions

The Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Nevada Division of Forestry have announced the implementation of shooting restrictions for all state and federally owned lands. In addition, the Carson City Fire Department has now implemented shooting restrictions on city and privately owned lands including “open space lands” within Carson City. The ban is effective from June 30th 2017 through September 30th 2017. Target shooting is still authorized at the Carson Rifle and Pistol Range located at 4000 Flint Rd, Carson City.
This year’s extremely wet winter has produced higher than normal grass and vegetation growth. Vegetation in western Nevada and eastern California has dried out significantly. A large crop of grass and brush is evident at lower elevations and trees and other forest vegetation at higher elevations are quickly drying out. The Northern Nevada area has already experienced several documented fires caused by target shooting. We encourage the public to safely enjoy the public lands, bearing in mind that human-caused fires annually threaten human life, private property and public land resources every summer.
Fires caused by target shooting are unwanted human-caused ignitions that mostly occur in the wildland urban interface, threatening human life and property. These fires also expose firefighters to unnecessary risk and can cause irreversible and costly natural resource damage.
Shooting Restrictions:
• Target shooting is an appropriate use of public land when and where it can be enjoyed safely. Any shooting restrictions put in place on the Carson City Open Space are for the safety of the public and to protect natural resources. Restrictions will not prevent licensed hunters from hunting in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations.
• Target shooting is defined as any shooting other than in pursuit of game. Within the restricted area, discharging a firearm, air rifle or gas gun [36 CFR 261.58(m)] will be prohibited. This restriction does not limit the ability to carry or possess a legal firearm.
