The U.S. Constitution establishes a “federal” system of government in the United States. Because of this federal structure, there are two levels of government in the U.S. (State and federal), and there are 51 separate legal systems! In addition to federal law and federal courts, each one of the 50 States has its own set of laws and courts.

Professor,
Great video. I have one question I was hoping you could answer. I saw that federal law requires states to pay 50k per year of incarceration to those who are wrongfully imprisoned. However, Missouri law states that wrongfully imprisoned can only receive compensation if they are exonerated by DNA evidence. How are they able to bypass the federal law in this case and only allow it if proven by DNA evidence?

Hi I’m in Texas and I’m born in the 2000 and I’ve been having trouble with purchasing tobacco/nicotine products due to the new federal mandate. I was wondering if the grandfather clause granted by Texas to military under 18(which I’m not) or, person born before Aug 29, 2001(I fall into)supersedes federal law. I am confused as marijuana is federally legal but some state laws allow recreational use or medicinal. I just want to be mindful of my rights and to be able to exercise them appropriately. Thank you
