For this project we're using kaowool to make a new lightweight backyard foundry, for melting copper. The steps Grant Thompson covers for creating a mini metal foundry for mixing metals and melting glass aren’t completely easy, but he’ll help you avoid the mistakes, so you end up with an awesome backyard foundry.

This metal foundry project is also great for those wanting to know how to make other cool things: forging aluminum, melting aluminum, melting brass, glass melting, molten metal, homemade foundry experiment, charcoal foundry, DIY smelting furnace, metal furnace, homemade foundry, cool science projects and more! Let us know what cool foundry experiments you create!

If you’re looking to try something new or for an activity such as: DIY metal project, foundry projects, cool science experiments, fun weekend project, or just a fun project with the family, watch the video to learn more.

One of my favorite videos. Your absence is still felt on here. Very few people are able to make these projects approachable while also having such a positive attitude.

Just a hint for you, when cutting thin sheet metal with a hole saw, run the hole saw in reverse and it will not grab, giving you a much smoother cut.

Shoot, this is a cool build. I hadn't thought about the potential of making a foundry super light weight with fiber wool. Interesting...Maybe something that can be taken on the road.

Kaowool is toxic if you breathe it in so you do want to be wearing a face mask
- **isn't wearing a face mask**
And it is extremely itchy so you want to be wearing long sleeves

I know you guys really really like metal casting, so reply to this comment with requests on what you want to see, and there's a good chance I'll make a video on it. Begin...

Something to add; we've been using kaowool to build blacksmith's forges for years now, and one super-critical thing to note. It's fine to cut slow when it's cool, but it disintegrates very easily when hot if you poke it. If it does get hit when hot, you also have the added effect of that hot ceramic dust being blown out at you by the gas pressure. It's best to put a fire brick in the bottom of your furnace or forge to put parts or the crucible on, which has the pleasant side benefit of making your lining last a lot longer.

Great of you to give advice on how to properly deal with that wool!

Why didn't he wear a respirator? I mean, he's talking about how bad it is, but he doesn't even wear one!

I'm surprised his wife is pleased with him lighting that thing in the house

Wow this seems much better than your previous metal foundry

Great Idea Grant, I would add one more step and that is to line the kaowool with mizzou refractory cement and plistix refractory so that the swirling fire doesn't blow microscopic fibers into the air and then into the lungs. The Kaowool fibers can fly far away. So defintiley and outdoor or garage with door open set up. IF you like I can send you the information. I'm the medical director/consultant for Blacksmithing For Beginners, International Blacksmithing, and Modern Blacksmithing. Thanks Grant for all you do....truly amazing to see you inspire others. Thanks I'd love to see you try HHO gas as a foundry/ forge fuel. As we talked about before. Docchuck

You should really consider coating the kaowool with ITC-100. The coating helps improve the efficiency of your foundry by up to 30% because it can reflect 98% of the IR radiation back into your crucible. IIt also protects against respirable silica. Refractory materials like Kaowool begin to break down at 1800 degrees releasing a form of respirable silica known as cristobalite. When applied to kaowool and cured, ITC-100 eliminates this problem.

Where one might see a pile of useless junk including giant cup made of rock, a trash can and a glass blanket, this guy saw an epic diy in the making. You sir are a wizard.

I absolutely loved this setup I was able to use a 2 and a half gallon steel bucket as a mega crucible (yes I know this is stupidly dangerous but it’s 22 guage steel with a big handle). Anyways I’ve always loved you and I will love whatever content you made forever
