Explore the heart of German culture with this insightful video exploring common stereotypes and the truths behind them. Hear from both expats and locals in Berlin as they discuss the realities of German life, from punctuality to privacy, and whether Germans always wear black. Join us as we break down the walls of misconception and reveal what German culture truly entails.

This video is about German culture, as explained by an American expat, and a German resident of Berlin. Both interviewees also explain how people in Berlin are different from the rest of Germany.

According to them, Germans live in a box by sticking to rules, being conservative and patient, dressing dark and black, complaining about their neighbors, and there seems to be a general pressure to fit in and conform. Contrary to stereotypes, they are measured and not the most direct, and rather talk behind your back, instead of telling you things straight into your face.

On the other hand, Germans like to show you their culture and include you after you make friends with them, which can be difficult at first. They can be very loyal, giving you small gifts when they go abroad, and showing you Oktoberfest or the Cafe and Kuchen culture.

Let us know in the comments about your experiences with German culture and people.

Multiculturalism is great. What really annoys me is the fact that a lot of hipsters who think they're cool don't learn German. I'm from Berlin, I grew up here, live in Kreuzberg and hear more English than German on the street. The expats keep to themselves and don't want to learn German either. I don't understand how you can live in a country where you don't want to learn the language. I have lived abroad and I speak several languages. One more, the other less well.

It's not very helpful if you only ask two people who have only seen a little of Germany. Germany is a diverse country with different cultures. There is a big difference whether you live in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, Leibzig, Dresden or Cologne. Similar to the US, each region has its own vibe. You can't talk about the culture in the US if you've only seen Texas.

Coming from a deeply gentrified city (Málaga, Spain), I don't see anything wrong about having a local language, and a local culture. Accepting and integrating other people is totally fine, but overriding your own culture (or at least the good parts of it), I don't think is a good thing.

2:11 how dare they expect people to speak their language.

My family is from NRW and it is a completely different culture.
Very chatty
Very much small talk
Very provincial and sheltered in terms of attitude etc...

But also muticultuarl in Cologne etc.

I find it difficult that I have gotten into a German circle of friends, due to my wife, but they hang together like a clique. There is no small talk to anyone but those in the clique. I grew up hating cliques and always did what I wanted. It was hard for me like last weekend, to be on top of each other three days. I felt smothered. I hear a lot, we don't do that or we do this. I will next time ask, have you tried it? In my home and private life, I'm American. Out in public, I will follow the norms.

Blaming Germans that you need to speak German in their country sounds pretentious when expressed in English.

Why ask this question in Berlin? As the rest of the country will tell you "Berlin isn't part of Germany"

But to be honest.... Germany and Berlin - are different

Berlin is it's own. Berlin is different. Really different from the majority of the rest of Germany. Berlin has an other character.

Club culture is nothing more than fun in a box, which is the club. There is nothing spontaneous about it. 😂😂😂

Of course, you have to know the language of the country you live in. You can't, for example, move to the USA and only speak only German there. They'll throw you out of the country.
6:55 Besides, there's nothing positive about diversity. The higher the diversity, the faster the country goes down. That has happened often enough in history and is currently happening with Europe too.
