They could also add Air Force One escort missions!

Edit: I mean you are escorting Air Force One over the Atlantic, or other places.

NASA usually have runways 2x the length of commercial ones, so the shuttle has a lower chance of overrunning

my Hometown airport was actually a emergency landing area for the space shuttle. BGR

I wanna see you try and butter the shuttle

When the shuttle lands, it also holds the nose up to bleed energy. You landings had the shuttle immediately putting the nose down. Try keeping the nose up

"and that's why they use Parachute"

That's why the salt flats were designated as an alternative landing sight for the shuttle.

Many moons ago completed the USAF Shuttle Rescue School at Edwards AFB.
Afterwards returned to home base that happened to be an alternate landing location for nominal takeoff at 40-45 second mark.
Wing CC asked me what would happen IF the shuttle landed at his base.
Sir, the shuttle is not going to land here. It's going to crash and then take out half of the city before it stops.
The expressions of my Fire Chief and the Colonel were precious.
Too funny when reality kicks in

Just add a sturdy wall, you can stop the space shuttle at any length.

Just build a reinforced concrete wall at the end of the run way.

Fact for everyone. While the shuttles never landed at the Griffiss when it was still a USAF SAC AFB, it's longest runway is 11, 820 feet it was an alternate landing site for them.
When it was a SAC base they had several different bombers over the years. The last being the B-52. A stripped B52 is on display at the gate on Chestnut St. The tornado that raveged Rome NY Summer 2024 came very close to the base and the B-52 was moved some 40 feet off it mounted base. It took some damage but is being repaired and returned to it base.
Another note is that when Griffiss was a SAC base the SR-71 did land there on October 13, 1973 during a flight to the Middle East.
