Ultra High Density Mango Experiment Update - 9B Arizona Desert

Mango trees are not commonly grown in my hot desert climate but are one of my favorite fruits and one I have always wanted to successfully grow and fruit. Mango trees can be challenging to grow in non-tropical climates (like arid deserts) if these elements are overlooked: rootstock vs soil structure, irrigation, and sunlight exposure. I’ve had failures over the years but have learned lessons and am now seeing positive results. I would like to see more home gardeners in a similar harsh climate avoid the challenges I faced earlier and succeed.

I am excited to share an update to the video, New High-Density Mango Seedling Area - AZ 9B from 2 years ago (linked below) of a 100 square-foot planting of mango seedlings in my non-ideal Phoenix Arizona area (one 9B) yard. It also shows progress from the expanded varieties planted in 2023 and 2024. Check out the progress and learn more about this young seedling experiment.

I have a few of the Sinclair mangoes. They have been doing very well in the San Francisco bay area. Very happy with it. I am so impressed you are able to keep so many varieties so healthy in such a tight space

So much good information in this video! I also prefer seedling mangos in the phx area they are much more resilient to our growing conditions. And I also plant my mangos right on top of the native soil. I literally cut the bottom of the mango's pot out with a razor blade, then place the bottomless pot right on top of the soil where i want the plant to grow. 1-2 years later the plant is rooted into the ground and I can cut off the sides of the pot and add some more amended soil around the sides of the root ball. I didn't realize other people were doing this also! I actually had people laugh at me before for doing this lol

Fantastic video on your Mango varieties collection! Please plant or graft Kesar on in-ground tree. Would love to see video on how it grows/fruits in-ground. Thanks.

You can have a scion from fruit cocktail if u like. Have cotton candy too but it's like 7 gal size now. Coconut cream and Venus are still small.

My mind is blown from how much growth you have gotten. Did you start in the bigger containers or did you step up to them.

I had watched your earlier videos on this subject when the seedlings were small. Great progress! A lot to learn from your experience. How to you make those labels? TIA

Do you still apply gypsum or sulfur each year?
I’ve been using blood & bone meal on my Nam Doc Mei 3 times a year & one application of gypsum. The tree looks healthy but definitely not a fast growing tree.
I kinda wish I had planted a different variety but I still have room for one or two more. Now I have some new ideas. Thanks!

what is the best way to get access to a lot of varieties and start them? I live in California central valley Zone B. And would love to do something like this. Would I also need to use frost cloth during winter since we get frost?

Hi 🙋‍♂️,
what‘s your opinion on the variety „Spirit of 76“ ? Is this a kind of mango you would like to grow ?

How do you find the air layered mangos in comparison with the seedlings?
