The real problem would be to change constantly the size of the batch, it would be difficult to track closely every change and also it would put pressure on the supply chain. But if eventually it is required to change the size it would be perfectly possible as long as changes are eventual, are proven to be more benefical for the company and there is a robust change managment system

Batch sizes would never be that low for Screw machines and your equipment avaiablity sets how much you can produce. I usually use batch sizes of 50 for my CNC lathes or Mills but never for my CNC screw machines just crazy to think I would run 100 pieces of a small screw on a production run, setup would kill my overhead. Batch sizes depends on the time, the equipment, the number of workes, lead times, tooling, jig, fixture and other factors, been doing this for 45 years.

Good issue, Paul.
I have clients however, that are not fixing always the same batch size, but they programe the total size of their customer order, witch is always different. And sometimes I find very difficult to convince them to cut a customer order in 2 or 3 batches. How is your experience.
