Simple Dodge & Burn Technique in Photoshop - Sculpting the Face by Dodging & Burning

Hey Everyone! Welcome back to another exciting photoshop tutorial.
In this video, I’m gonna show you how to add shine and glamour effect or apply Dodge and Burn to your portraits in photoshop.

Let’s go ahead and get started.

Here we are in photoshop and our portrait is opened.
This is a free image I have downloaded from pexels dot com.
If you want, you can download it and follow along. The link is in the video description.

First, make a duplicate of the background layer by hitting control or command J.
Change the layer name to Highlights.

And change the blending mode to Screen. We have a very bright image now.

Right-click on the layer and choose Blending Options.
If you see at the bottom center, we have an option called underlying layer.

Click and drag the black slider to the right. Then hold on the Alt or Option key to split the slider into two. Now drag the sliders to make a feathered selection.
Click on ok to apply the changes.

Duplicate the background layer again by hitting control or command J. Rename it to shadows.
And change the blending mode to multiply this time.
Right-click on the layer and choose Blending Options.
Go to the underlying layer part. Now drag the white slider to the left.
Then hold on the Alt or Option key to split the slider into two.
Now drag the sliders to feather the areas.
Click on ok to apply the effect.

Now select both the highlights and shadow layers.
Press Control or Command G to group the layers.
And add a layer mask to the group.

Select the mask and go to, image, apply image. Leave everything as default. And click ok. Cool!

It is looking awesome already.

Now let us add some shine to the lips area.

Create a solid color adjustment layer above all the layers.

Choose white for the color. And hit ok.

Right-click on the layer and choose Blending Options.

Go to the underlying layer option, drag the black slider to the right.
Hold Alt or option to separate it and drag the sliders.
And hit ok.

Now select the layer mask and hit control or command I to invert it.

Then take the soft brush tool.
Make sure the foreground color is white.
And start brushing. Cool!

That’s it!
So this how we can add shine and glamour to portraits in photoshop.
