PS Tutorial - Super Simple Dodge & Burn Method

Apologies for the crap framing. I didn't have my monitor.

I've seen various ways of dodging and burning, from using the tool straight on a photo, to using a gray 50% layer above and applying it there, to using the high-pass filter, but none of them allows the user to see exactly what they're brightening and what they are making darker quite like this method does. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Wow!!! Holy crap!!! This is so amazing, I can't tell you. The whole dodge and burn thing has been driving me crazy, just have no clue what to do!!! This approach, gets results... And not only that, but the Group you can change the opacity and/or add a layer mask so you can add this where you want after the fact. Great, thank you... This is a 6 year old post, but so so glad I bumped into it... Hope your business, work, is still going well and you are staying safe during these trying times.... Sounded like an Irish accent, i think?

Interesting, but would it not be quicker and easier just to paint on using reduced density white or black on, use Gaussian and then a mode (overlay, soft light etc) to work it in, then spread it if necessary? Then you could use dodge and burn where you need to, to neaten it up at the end?

How do I do this if my background isn't a white blank canvas as I usually do basic adjustments in Lightroom before clicking the edit in Photoshop option and my background layer ends up just being the photo itself

Great video this really helped me. So cool how it completely enhances lighting. Love the pause for a beer sip moment lol. Glad to find a friendly fellow Irish accent to assist also.

Great video and very effective results.

I am however having a issue when it comes to the 'Group 1' layer on the original document, the one that gets the Blend Mode set to Soft Light.
In the video that layer is blank, however when I do it there's a duplicate image and obviously the whole image changes when set to Soft Light.

I've watched the video over and over, doing exactly what you do but I can't work out where I'm going wrong.

Any help would be hugely appreciated!! Thanks.

i was thinking wtf this guy is going to do with this image with that particular technique because i was watching it for the first time, but when you applied it was just amazing to see the result..Nice job dude!! btw your workflow was quite slow so plz mind to get it going quickly.
