"If it ain't broke and it still works just use it" is the Army's mantra. When I was in in the Mid '80's, they were still using Korean/Vietnam war era equipment. That is a M113.

M113, probably older than every single person there. No surprise that this happened. Probably lost a radiator hose somewhere and started spewing steam inside, causing everyone to bail. It then sped down the road at full speed while slowly losing coolant, then it finally got hit enough to start setting things on fire. The armorer is going to be pissed about that rifle.

Cant believe this APC is still in service. I'm 60 and remember riding in one of these in 1st grade.

Troop Heater switch is in the Prime selection, Dumping fuel into the Burn Chamber which is Glowing Hot. Excess Fuel runs out of the Base of the Chamber onto the Floorboards and Ignites. Just behind Engine Compartment Right Side, the smoke is actually coming out of the heater exhaust. B2/6 Inf. C-33 T.C. Erlangen Germany 1985 - 1990

M113 as a former operator of said vehicle class, looks as if the PAC went up, fuel line or someone was cooking a meal and forgot about it, yes it's a thing I used to cook my meals on the manifold

Machine Spirit got angry, and then they didn't listen to the Techpriest.

That’s a 113 and I was a driver of a 1064A3 (120mm mortar variation). I had a coolant pump failure that locked up the belt on the back of the engine. If we would have had the heater on it could have lit the fuel lines up. Fortunately for us the heater was broke so it cooked the head gasket instead.

The ol' 113. It was designed and tested in 1957 and adopted by the Army in 1960. The M113A1 variant came out in 1964, and I would almost bet that this particular one was manufactured right around that same time. But as long as you did good maintenance on it they would last forever... uh... well... maybe not.

113s also have Detroit Diesel engines, which are known to "run away". So basically the motor revs to a unsafe rpm and refuses to idle down until it is either out of fuel or kaboom

100% sure that the footage that caught what happened was deleted

M113, radiator or fuel line went poof? Willing to bet it was the radiator since it looks like they were trying to cool the engine.

m113 the 6v53 engine in it is knuckle dragging ancient. lots of bolts for brackets and stuff go straight through into the engine. if a random bolt is loose it can leak oil and coolant. get hot and burn.

M113's are very prone to catch fire. I believe it's just because of the age of them. I've seen several burn down the last years before I retired.

Back in the day, the U.S. got a hold of one of the first BMPs. The generals wanted to see how it performed, but the person in charge of safety said it couldn't be driven because the transmission could catch fire at any moment and kill the crew because there was no firewall.

I'd say the battery compartment in the 113 should have been redesigned

Back in 1978, I was the Executive Officer (X.O., 2nd in command and Motor Pool Officer) of a Combat Support Company for a Mech Infantry Battalion (EVERYTHING that wasn't a M-113). We had 53 vehicles in the company in an era when battalions had that many vehicles in the rest of the battalion. A buddy told me the Inspector General staff was dead-lining vehicles (during the annual inspection) for having the tiniest of leaks where the fuel-line met the fuel-filter. And every vehicle had those leaks! This video shows why they failed inspection. I drove into town and bought this brand-new stuff called Teflon Tape. After the third vehicle, they realized I was on to them - passed with the highest rating in the division!
