How To Argue For Immigration Restrictions

What you need to do (and avoid doing) to successfully argue for immigration restrictions:

00:36 - 1. Specify how, when, where, and why.
02:00 - 2. Stop pretending that immigrants are criminals.
05:41 - 3. Don't use another big-government policy to justify it.
09:57 - 4. Don't play the terrorism card.
11:52 - 5. Again, learn some economics already!
17:13 - 6. Learn some history already.
19:40 - 7. Stop playing the "My grandad came here legally" card.
21:16 - 8. Remember that Prohibition doesn't work.
22:26 - 9. Don't claim there are "too many."
23:15 - 10. Don't be a racist.

No welfare and open borders. Immigration should be neither restricted nor subsidized.

If it werent for you and many other libertarians i might still believe in the border wall.

If you ever do a remastered version of this one, I can think of an honorary 11th one:
11. Stop conflating government borders with private property.

I see a TON of conservatives go on about how, "if you believe in open borders, then remove all the doors and windows from your house! LAWL!" etc.

Libertarian racist, like libertarian socialist is a contradiction in terms.  Libertarianism = individualism, while racism & socialism = collectivism.  They are mutually exclusive.  So to the so-called "libertarians" in the comments defending racist stupidity, no, but you are not libertarians, any more than self proclaimed "libertarian socialists" are libertarian.

+Kyle P "but if you take into account the benefits that they apply for their natural born children" Second- and third-generation immigrants are accounted for in these stats.

Here are some ideas for future videos that you could make.

How To Argue For War(with an emphasis on the military draft and how wars are often not necessary)
How To Argue For Business Restrictions(here, you could explain how regulations often increase unemployment and discourage entrepreneurship)
How To Argue For Corporate Subsidies(this video would address how wealth inequality is largely the result of corporatism and not capitalism)
How To Argue For Welfare(which would demonstrate how we've solved the issue of poverty before welfare came along and that it's now keeping people in poverty)

You picked a controversial topic amongst libertarians and "libertarians"

Thank you for making this very informative video, Shane. I'll have to save and use some of the citations in the future. It is truly astounding to me the number "libertarians" who espouse support for open markets and civil liberties, except when it comes to immigration for some inexplicable reason. That said, I really don't think most of the anti-immigrant crowd are at all racists or even generally xenophobic, so I'm not sure what the source of this mindset is? What do you think it is?

The best way to argue for anything is to be right in the first place.

This is an informative and well argued presentation.

Something it brought up for me was how anti immigrationists argue that immigrants will take away the natives culture at the same time they also argue that immigrants don't integrate and preserve their cultures. An obvious contradiction. If immigrants can preserve their cultures, why not natives?

Adding to this video is the fact that net immigration from Mexico has been negative since 2008. Most immigrants, including "illegals" in the past several years have been from China and India. Yet another reason why "hur hur build a wall!" would NOT work.

Because Somalians love freedom as much as Europeans do, right?

The best way to summarize point 1: Communicating badly, then acting smug when you're misunderstood is NOT the same thing as cleverness.

Interesting video Shane, I think the only thing I personally disagree with is nearer the start as there is that slight difference in my opinion with the crime difference of the type of immigrants going to the US to one's in Britain. I agree though that immigration should be free and that this is an economic argument and an economic problem rather than an immigration problem. Leftists hold to things like the NHS and the welfare state like it's a church and religion and due to that our country will end up suffering. For me the only sensible way of properly having the free flow immigration is to roll back the welfare state. I couldn't tell you all the statistics however with regards to wages but what I do know is that a free market allows people to flourish, it is largely a government's problem that in the end causes problems thus the very reason I hope to see Britain move more in that direction.

I know this is a very late comment, but I just want to thank you, Shane, for this video and the points you make in it. I've been in too many arguments with people who conflate all illegal immigrants with criminals who need to be stopped with lethal force, and when I try to make similar points to this video, I get responses like I'm the one being completely unreasonable. I've heard so many anti-immigrant arguments I have been beginning to actually think I'm the crazy one. I still don't know what to do about all the complications of this issue, but thank you for reminding me that other people see what I see here.

Open immigration for people who are hostile to liberty is antithetical to liberty, A free society would necessarily have a highly selective immigration policy.  You can't be a defender of property rights if you view all boundaries as meaningless imaginary lines.  Such premises lead to communalism, and the abolition of borders leads to world government,

I am a Syrian seeker of Freedom and Asylum ... I fled my home, my country I left back family and friends I might not see again; I left my childhood memories; I lost all that to violence and oppression. Violence and crimes are my enemies; no one hates violence or criminals more than me. I am seeking asylum to live in peace and I will literally devote my soul to the country that provides me with a safe home, freedom, and human rights. I will literally die to protect the community that gives me that. Refugees suffered from violence first hand, and we hate it the most; stop stupidly calling us criminals and violent.

Good stuff. Do you have a link to a citation list? Some of those facts would be great to keep in my pocket.

I love to watch 70's martial arts Japanese/Chinese movies and many of them will ask one another if they're the other nationality, while here we just mash them together as "Asian". Interesting how different areas see one another differently and how they have friction with one another when many would assume they were "the same thing".
