There are varying degrees of blindness. It's was revealed in the 90s that Stevie could see/was not 100% blind. His field of vision is extremely narrow and irreversible. He said can distinguish shadows and with decades of living like this you would get used to it and function pretty well.

A friend of mine who plays jazz bass says in 84 he played a show with Stevie in Cleveland. He seen him tossing up cheezits in the air and eating them at his piano during rehearsal.

He heard your voice that's how he could walk up to you. Also people don't realize there's different levels of blindness. Some blind people can see lights and shadows but still be considered blind.
