America is a weird place. The bystander effect in Western cultures is just too disheartening because why the hell is an elderly woman being harrased and people are taking videos instead of helping her? Others are walking right by without any fibre of concern in their bone. Try this in an African country (especially towards elderly people) and everyone would drop what they are doing to confront you because there is no way we will fold our arms and watch a vulnerable person being harrassed or abused. I have noticed this behaviour pattern in other cultures and I think it's because there is an emphasis on individualism and not much of community/living communally - or what we call "ubuntu" in South Africa. I am because you are. There is no stranger. Any mother is your mother. Any father is your father.

It's annoying and hurtful to watch this.

I'm proud of Grandma but the brothas and sistas watching and filming on their phone watching this Karen steal our elders cart and doing absolutely nothing about it are HELLA OFF CODE!!! Instead of calling her Ali, they should have immediately intervene to make sure Grandma got her cart back from this disrespectul Karen!!! This couldn't happen in front me!

I remember being 9 months pregnant with my son and trying to get one of these carts and it was so scarce to locate one in the store. And when I seen and elderly man barely holding himself up with a cane I just let him have it. I couldn't imagine walking the whole Walmart in these conditions . I sent my husband to do the shopping ( he dislikes shopping) .

It's sad to see a younger woman disrespect an elder the way she did. Grandma should never have had to deal with this issue on her own. Where was security? The people who stood by and cheered her on should have stepped in!
