YOU DEFINITELY DIDN'T KNOW THIS - KTM EXC XC-W TPI 2023 WARNING !

I am really worried and surprised why KTM decided for 2023 to use KYMCO cylinders instead of ELKO which are of sufficient quality on EXC300 TPI, XC-W300 TPI. Can Kymco Taiwanese company really make such a high quality cylinder that can withstand the extreme condition. If something is good then why change it? It is certainly in the interest of saving a large amount of money, as soon as I bought the motorcycle I received a message from a friend, he said i got bike with kymco cylinder. I asked him what do you mean by that, he told me it wont last long, to be honest I felt bad and I thought he was joking.

Before this happened to me, my close friend had the same thing happen on his 2022 model. His piston also broke the head, connecting rod, cylinder and bearings when we talk about the damage that occurred, we can say that it is the same like mine. And I must say that it had a completely factory engine, with an original head, and that it worked flawlessly until this happened. He always uses motorex cross power oil and rides the engine a lot better than me, I riding a lot with the gas wide open while he rides more in mid revs, but everything that happened to me happened to him anyway so its a bit strange. What do you say ?

All those clips seem to show S3 heads. Detonation maybe or squish gap too small?

We need Yamaha to build a YX 300X with a TBI soon, they have good quality, there is good demand for these bikes.

I’ve recently bought a tm 2t with carb. These are slightly cheaper than a ktm but they are hand built Italian quality (what ktm used to make 😂) it runs kyb forks and all the good stuff. I love it, worth considering. My previous bike was 2020 te 250 2t tpi and never had any problems with 100 hrs. I think ktm has lost focus and starting to use inferior products and increasing their prices that’s why I changed from ktm based bikes and I believe they will lose a lot more customers in the future. Shame ktm

Hey guys, unite your forces and contact KTM. I'd be interested in her take on the issue.

1)Is the piston or cylinder in ktm xcw/exc 300 2023 really diferent/worse than in previous years? Are Kymco cylinders on all ktm exc/xcw 300 2023?
2)If so, which piston or cylinder is best to replace the original one in the motor and at what hours?
3)Upgrade to bigger bore?
4)How often does this failure happen?

This is the same guy a few years ago that said KTM is testing TPI bikes on the public before they were actually proven. He modified his bike with a new head and who knows what else. Next he will start complaining about the new TBI bikes and say they are not ready for the public as well. Stop complaining and buy a Sherco or a Beta if you have so many issues with KTM. Or don’t pin your bike in 1st gear until it explodes as expected with after market mods. Happens to the pro’s race bikes all the time.

Mechanic here ... Seems to me like that piston has a manufacturing defect reminds me of the kdx piston problem someone needs to put a wiseco piston in one and run it in that cylinder to see if it wears weird, a wiseco won't shatter like that . I am a ktm rider 18' 350 xcf 214 hrs . Solid as a rock, the suspension needs 1000$ to work well that's not the end of the world .

I have a 2021 ktm xc-w 250 tpi. It blew up at 24 hours. Dealer said something let go in the cylinder. I don’t ride a lot obviously and I ride trail slow low rpm. Pisses me off . Chris k

Put the better barrels on and Wesco pistons in, would the older parts swap in . Put the after market piston stickers on the tank and they might get the message ! Build your own crank assembly and when factory works bikes blow up yours won't ..

This makes me want to consider Beta or Sherco for my next bike.

If you own one i highly recommended a ecu remap to allow the bike to use more oil and not detonate due to the stupid emissions regulations

KTM is one of those brands that make amazing machines, but I'd never buy a new model year of any of their machines. They are so bleeding edge with the engineering that they use the customers as R&D. You're better off buying slightly used older KTMs once you are sure it's a reliable model year. Many European brands are similar in this regard.

I'm wondering if the crank offset is too big for the height of the piston causing lateral slap of the piston in a cylinder .. I've never seen a piston shatter like glass before there must be more going on than just rubbish parts
