Here I present an album of photographs from around 1900 of the historic Russian town of Vyborg.
For centuries the area around Vyborg saw the bitter rivalry between Russia and its neighbours. The Vyborg Castle, built in 1293 on a small island Linnan-Saari off the Baltic coast, was a powerful Swedish stronghold. The castle was blocking a major trade route between the Russian merchant city of Novgorod and the Baltic Sea.......

Thank you for this, Nigel! My mother was born in Viipuri/Vyborg between the World Wars. Her father was a manager at a sawmill there. My mother and her family became refugees when the Winter War began in November of 1939. She felt homesick for her native Karelia for the rest of her life.

Nice video!🖒Viipuri is a wonderfull city💖It was Finnish from 6 December 1917- 13 March 1940.Then it was Finnish again from 30 August 1941- 20 June 1944.Finnish war veterans working for CIA, went into Viipuri several times 1948-55.In 1958 the first Finnish tourist buses started to go to Viipuri.
