Lister A - Lister Junior - Water Hopper Valve Cap Removal

preview_player
Показать описание
Facing the problem of a seized up exhaust valve, my first obstacle is trying to remove the extremely tight brass valve cap that covers the valve from inside the water hopper.
This is how I did mine and the tools that I used....

1" square Mild Steel Bar - minimum 12" long
24" Stilsons Wrench
Copper Mallet
Long 6' Steel Scaffold Tube
Gloves
A heavy object like a van

Totally ingenious Paul, you certainly made that look relatively easy....it's wonderful to see the Master at work, and still being able to record it for all your fans to enjoy it with you...heavy engineering is a superb someone who struggles to screw a screw into a piece of wood....10/10....Bob

@reversecone I was seriously struggling to remove these caps, so had the long tube failed to crack it, I really didn't know what my next move would have been in all honesty. I also thought I would struggle to hold the engine from spinning around, so I was really glad when the vans weight held it steady, then the first crack as the nut went, I knew I'd sorted it. Phew!! ha ha - now all I have to do is find somebody who supplies new valves and guides, the reassemble everything back.
Cheers Reg

@hanomagman I have struggled to do this, not knowing what to use, and roughly how to go about it, so my thoughts are here it is if anyone else out there needs to do this very same job, and is also struggling to undo the brass valve caps. Knowledge is a wonderful thing, and makes life very easy when you know how.
Thanks Jarno :-)

Thank you for your helpful video. I'd tried to remove the valve caps with a socket, but not had much luck. So, got some 1"bar, bought some 24" Stillsons (screwfix) and got a scaffold pole. It took some effort (more than on your video) but they both came out. Thanks for the info - so helpful.

The right tools and the job's a good'n!

I had a similarly tight flywheel key to remove another but of key steel to remove

I recently bought a pair of identical stilsons, if I ever get a "junior" I know I won't get stuck lol

Very inventive demonstration Paul. In this case it may be the wrong tools LOL I do wish I had a dollar for every time over the years, that I resorted to using A cheater bar on a pipe wrench. Great video

I removed mine whilst the engine was stone cold, it didn't run anyway at the time, as it needed new valves / Guides etc. I used large Stilsons and a very long tube, and as you can see I needed every bit of weight from my van to hold her still whilst I tugged on the tube. Mine were in very tightly, but once cracked they came out easily. Its that first initial cracking of the screw thread thats difficult. Yours could prove easier, its an unknown isn't it?.
I will say "Good Luck" :-)

Job well done earned a cuppa there. Great ideas to using the trusty Sprinter to give you a hand! Cheers. Paul. :-))

@05clenharth Well thanks to you on that front, I hadn't even considered inch square mild steel to be honest, I was looking to get a big socket. The exhaust was definitely the hardest to crack, but it did go with the long tube on the end of things. All well and good having a long tube, but you then need to stop your engine spinning round, hence my van.
Q - Any idea where I can get replacement valves and guides for the Junior or even good old ones..?
Thanks :-)

@wizard8838 Lucky!! I've had serious headaches wondering how on earth Im going to shift these two without access to workshop facilities. I've had diesel soaking around them, bashed them, looked at them, scratched my head and so on... ha ha
Nothing beats the sound of that first "crack" you know you've done it by then... phew!! now for the jammed in exhaust valve next, wonder what that holds for me. :-)

its just the good fit of that square stock in the plug that makes it work, people use stuff that is to small and it stripps and then they are buggerd they have to drill them out and tap

@robmasterman Its amazing what a big long tube can do with plenty of torque behind it, hence I needed the van to stop it all spinning around. Once I heard that big nut crack I knew I was onto a winner, had it not gone, I think it would have been a serious matter for gas bottles next. LOL
Thanks for watching Bob, any time you have a job for a long tube let me know.... ha ha :-)
