Whoever painted these is extremely talented. It's obvious that these are the same two people, and you don't really see that in many pieces of older work.

Tying her ribbon around his arm to carry into battle...indescribable!

I love how soft his eyes got as he stares at her face. It just gives you the feeling of reluctance in his part to leave her. So romantic.... Now if only it were real lol

Fun fact. This is a medieval custom. The lady gives her lover some sort of favor before he carries out his knightly duties, generally in situations that involved life or death. The favor that the lady gifts is usually a priceless heirloom or her personal ribbon, scarf, or handkerchief. In the painting, the red sash was an indication that it was made with expensive Red dye in comparison to the contemporary dyes of the time, was difficult to come by because of how it was made. The root of the madder plant was harvested only once a year. Furthermore, as a physical symbol of reuniting, the gifts were most likely handmade by the lady herself.

The emotions in these paintings are so powerful. The connection between the knight and the lady is palpable.

I love the expression on the man in the second painting. Its so many emotions at once, and yet so plain. He seems brave, but scared in that moment that they will never meet again.

To be HONORED by a woman is the sweetest joy a man can hope for. It means he has succeed in fulfilling his most ancient role.

I strive to embody the essence of the woman in the first painting. I've always adored that painting

The symbolism in these paintings is truly moving. The act of exchanging favors before battle is so heartfelt and emotional.

A warrior understands that going to war against his enemy is easy to do. It's getting back home to those that love him which is the hardest to do.

i always liked the idea of the queen having the duty of knighting her soldiers. its a beautiful mix of authority and femininity. she is showcasing her authority and superior status by being the one to hold the sword and grant him the title, but its also like she is representing the realm(mother earth) as a woman asking for the man to be brave and defend her. the concept is very romantic, no matter how unrealistic it is.

She’s gorgeous. Utterly beautiful, like a goddess. I’m so jealous…of him!

These hit the soul man, realizing so many great warriors fought for something & many have died out there somewhere realizing “I will never come home to her” it makes me wonder if some great warriors were on there last breath, continuing to fight (get enraged) bc they wanted to come home to there wives or family.

She's beautiful & the painting is so exquisite that you can imagine the feel of her touch. My heart aches for them 💔

A man scared, fearful yet brave and ready to fulfill his destiny. Poetic

I love how delicately each person was painted, and how each person's emotions vary on the scale. Edmund Leighton knew what he was doing, and it has effected my brain in all the creative crevices

The emotions just ran through my veins, sending a wave of nostalgia for some reason...The painting is so well done.
