He actually says he is salafiyyu without saying he is, Salafi it’s not a label but a path to follow, when you follow pure Islam as from the prophet and sahabas and understanding of the pure early scholars as he mention then you follow the way of the salaf and so we call you pure Muslim= athariyyah= salafiyyun. It’s like when we call all prophets before Muhammad was Muslims.

I am following school thought (madzhab 'aqeedah) of Ashā'irah, and this madzhab is the most dominant in my country, Malaysia. And there were also have another schools of thought such as Athāriyyah and Māturīdiyyah but they were minorities. But this will not make us being hateful, disrespect of another because these three madzhabs were in part of Ahl as-Sunnah wal-Jamā'ah (the group of Prophet pbuh and ṣahābah [his companions]'s followers) and part of Ahl al-Qiblah (people of Islam's direction).

In case, some people that didn't study further were said that some muslim did pray /worship /idolize (عابد) to saints, pious & honourable men and great scholars' (awliyā', ṣālihīn & 'ulamā') tombs. This is an obvious misunderstanding in nowday, because these kind practises are supplication practise (التوسّل) from metaphorical causes that Allah had put blesses and righteous onto them.

Beside, the supplication (التوسّل) is also been practised onto the living pious men by following their teaching, giving respect and honour. To be understand, these practises are just shown as honour and respect to the sign of Allah's greatness and mercies.

Hence, we must know the meaning of the pray /worship (العبادة) by shar'iyyat (Islamic legitimative) definition :

العبادة في الشرع هي: الخضوع والتذلل لمن يعتقد ربوبيته
"The submission ;(exp prostration) and cringe for who (entity) were believed to be his God (Master)". – Al-Imām Abū Zuhrah, "al-Qawl as-Sadeed"

If some muslim did prostration (سجود) to anything for example, and didn't believe that it is his God to be worshipped, so that wasn't kind of "worshiping", and not being disbelief (shirk). If this was definied as "worshiping", then some angels in heaven were worshipped prophet Adam (as) that Allah had commanded them to doing that.

{ وَإِذۡ قُلۡنَا لِلۡمَلَـٰۤئِكَةِ ٱسۡجُدُوا۟ لِأَدَمَ فَسَجَدُوۤا۟ إِلَّاۤ إِبۡلِیسَ أَبَىٰ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ وَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ }
"And [mention] when We said to the angels, Prostrate before Adam; so they prostrated, except for Iblis. He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers." – Surah Al-Baqarah: 34

Then the angels will be displeased by Allah by doing that, but if they didn't doing it, they will be disobeyed from Allah. In addition, the angels are the creature who were free from being disobey and always submit to Allah.

{ لَّا یَعۡصُونَ ٱللَّهَ مَاۤ أَمَرَهُمۡ وَیَفۡعَلُونَ مَا یُؤۡمَرُونَ }
".. they (the angels) do not disobey Allāh in what He commands them but do what they are commanded." –Surah At-Tahrîm: 6

However, Islamic legitimation had precise that the similar practise of "prostration", "bowing down and kneeling", and "over-appeal (شدة الاستغاثة) may be avoid to prevent the appearance of temptation (fitnah) onto muslim nation, and to prevent public people especially who are misunderstanding to practise it blindly.

Wallahu a'lam biṣ-Ṣawāb (only Allah knows the truth and right)

A woman, who lived in an area where people followed the Mālikī school, came to a Shaykh who didn’t follow any of the four schools, asking him a question.
The Shaykh said: Shall I give you fatwa according to Qur’ān & Sunna or the opinion of Imām Mālik?
The lady replied: please give me fatwa according to the opinion of Imām Mālik (may Allāh be pleased with him) as he understood the Qur’ān & Sunna better than you.

The problem people don’t know is that those label came to describe the aqidah of Muslims, anyone can be called Muslim but what he bellieve about God, the prophet, the sahabas, the worshiping, and other religious stuff is what differentiates from Group to group, if you follow the pure Islam as its on Quran and sunnah it’s good when you call yourself Muslim only but when you deny bidaa people will start to label you as Wahabi/ salafi/ ahlul athariy and other labels. But when see other people labeled the same label as you then you will find them to be practicing Islam as it is. Then automatically you will agree with the label, and you will need clarification of the aqidah when someone tells you he is a Muslim. Remember guys Shia calling him themselves Muslim and Quraniyuun calling themselves Muslims. So not all Muslims are the same and this is what the prophet said.
