#34 ESP-01/ESP-07 4Mbyte Memory Upgrade and OTA

In this video I show how to change flash memory chips in ESP8266 ESP-01 and ESP-07 modules. I show how you can check memory size with your Arduino IDE and use ESP-01 now for upload over the air.

I've just been sent here on a link from the HP PSU video in 2020 - amazing the difference between your tone of voice/presenting style in the last 5 years ! Barely recognised you :)

5 years later, and it's still a useful video!

Just purchased your "Kolban's Book on ESP8266. Best five bucks I have spent in a long time. I recommend this book to anyone tinkering with the ESP. I have managed to get a web server running and some code to send emails but this book will take me much further. Thanks.

Hello Andreas. I'm from Brazil, I've changed the flash memory from 1 MB to 4 MB on the ESP01 and it worked perfectly. Now I can do the OTA, which was impossible with the original 1 MB flash memory. Thank you so much for the tip and keep up the good work.

This video made us understand why ESP-01 is impossible OTA, even though ESP-12 is possible. Thanks nice video.

I've upgraded the esp-01 memory on many boards, but, never on the -07. However, , after reviewing your video, again for the nth time, I'm ready to try it on my esp-07. My local library has a hot air tool in the maker space.

I think I may have purchased the wrong flash. Do you happen to know the difference between the W25Q32BVSSIG and the W25Q32FVSSIG? I installed a W25Q32FVSSIG and it's not working, unless I have to do something other than write to the chip as normal with the Arduino IDE. Thanks for your time and videos!

Hi Andreas, Thank you for this video. I need to get a hot air set up now ;-) FYI the link to the memory upgrade chip has gone 404. Any chance you could update the notes to include the chips details please?

I do not have a hot air gun at the moment but it would be a nice christmas present to myself. Have you covered them in another video or can you suggest a supplier and size/power (kw) that I would need for soldering SMD's?
Many thanks
Arthur

Yet in 2020, it is very rare to see 16MByte dev kit version in the market
