My aunt, who is paralyzed from polio since 5years old, HATES the term "disabled"...she says she is crippled and fully able! I agree! Look deeply into the word "disabled." It's not very complimentary, isn't it?

83 now. I grew up in a very rural little town. Two of the neighborhood kids were what would now be called “special” or something. They were just thought of then as the “village idiots”. They went to school with us, played with the other kids, and were pretty much just accepted. People were better back then.

I remember going through the dilemma of what I should be referred as. I finally settled on that I don't mind what you call me, as long as it's with respect. Even the so called politically correct word or words can be offensive if they lack respect.

Ricky is nearly right, back in the 70s disabled children were referred to as Spastic . There use to be fibreglass models that were usually stood outside shops with Help Spastic children, with a donation slot on a box hung around the neck of one of the kids. Ian Dury even wrote a song with the word Spasticus in the title refering to his life living with Polio.

The name change ritual IS the point. It doesn't matter how the old word sounded or how the new word sounds. The important thing to special interest groups is the *ritual* of demanding a change of terminology. It's a way of saying, "We're important. We dictate how everyone refers to us. We are declaring the old term 'bigoted' and the new term 'accepted.' We have spoken!" It's happened with:
Colored > black > African-American > Black
Oriental > Asian
Down's Syndrome > Down Syndrome
Handicapped > disabled

The name change is the RITUAL

My sister has cerebral palsy, and when we were growing up it was referred to as being spastic. She attended the Spastic Centre. If I ever say those words now I get gasps of horror from people who have no clue. Saying someone has CP actually erases their 'disability' because CP (the initials, not the words cerebral palsy) sounds so mild and not serious.
