Best Book for You to Get Started with Mathematical Statistics

Let's take a trip to the park and check out a very interesting book on mathematical statistics. This book is HUGE and has tons of statistics in it but it does require that you know some calculus for many of the sections.

I used this book for two courses at the undergraduate level in mathematical statistics. The pre-req for those courses was Calculus 3. There are even some small proofs in the book.

The book is called Mathematical Statistics with Applications by Dennis Wackerly, William Mendellhall and Richard L. Scheaffar.

If you use this link to purchase the book I will make a small percentage.

For those completely new to statistics, I highly recommend Statistics without Tears by Derek Rowntree. If you're like me and are piss poor at math and, for some reason, decided to learn data science, this book is an eye opener.

Just finish reading this book(but skip last chapter), I discovered this book by your recommendation, thank you!

Not bad, but Mood, Graybill and Boes « Introduction to the theory of statistics » is better. The only bad thing about this book is the lack of insights about convergence in law, in probability and almost sure. Casella and Berger « Statistical inference » is better for that.

recommend statistical inference by casella and berge. Necessary one for Econ Phd in top universities.

This is a good book to start out if falls off on the details tho when you get to mutivariate transformations with the jacobian matrix as there is no clear explanation on how they support of transformed equations. Also the chapter on ordered statistics lacks some derivation at the end. All in all for introductory stats classes this is a great book but for last year undergrad to masters definitely go for modern mathematical statistics with application 2nd ed by springer because it hints at how one might derive the harder equations like a joint distribution of 2 or more ordered statistics while wackerly does not.

Last year statistics/ML student

That was my book when I took statistics back in the 1980s. Statistics was for me, one of the harder math classes. To be honest, I realize its importance, but I really didn't like statistics that much.

I like this book. I took a course out of it and used it for a reffernce for my further math stat classes the first out of Rice and the second out of Pawatan. A Similar book is math stat by devore and byrk. It's a little easier, but it has more modern topics like bayesian and logistic regression. This is especially true in newer editions.

You should review a book called a first course in probability by sheldon ross.

This seems also a great book for mathematical statistics. I also recommend 2 books, one is "Statistical Inference" by George Casella; and the other one is "Introduction to Mathematical Statistics" by Robert V. Hogg. I think they are also good for beginners. In addition, would you recommend some book for "Stochastic Calculus", "Stochastic Modelling" ? I am planning to study these topics, hope you may give us a book review for these topics.

Also a very advanced statistics book is "Optimal Statistical Decisions" by Morris H. DeGroot".

Very comprehensive, deep, and authoritative.

Can you make a list of recommended books for statistics please

This certainly should be a vigorous and standard book of this subject. I was able to access it and the student solution manual; would you be able to suggest any sefl study advice how to use this book? I was able to follow a standard calculus book, but when it came to stats I experienced some chanllenge in organizing the content well.

How is nobody here talking about Wassermann's All of statistics ?

Hello, your videos are great and really helpful! I ended up here because I am a statistics undergrad in my junior year and I am looking to transition from undegrad level statistics. Last semester I took mathematical statistics I and my instructor use the book of this video and it was really helpful. For mathematical statistics II my instructor is using Theoretical Statistics by Robert W. Keener. I am having trouble reading this book as I lack measure theory and advanced calculus. I am looking for a book that can fill in the gap between this other two books.

I just finished probability and will being taking math stats next semester. Both use this textbook. The book is great, but my professor is still doing online class, is terrible with computers, and just puts pictures of the definitions on the screen for us to read in silence. Then he puts an example up afterwards and thats the class. Honestly heartbreaking because it is the most interesting math class I think I've taken so far. But the professor ruins it. It is also very difficult compared to the calculus, linear algebra, and mathematical economics classes I've taken so far, although that could just be because we are more or less left to the wolves by the professor.

What do you think about the 2 books by:
1) Hogg and Craig, 4th to 6th editions
2) Mood, Graybill, and Boes, 3rd Edition

Hey Math Sorcerer, do you have any other recommendations for statistics books?

Good book, can please help me with a comprehensive book on Regression Analysis?

I need a non-calculus-based, rigorous introduction to statistics and probability theory (with LOTS of practice problems). If anyone can help me, I think answering here would benefit a lot of people.

I tried Dekking et al A Modern Introduction to Probability & Statistics. It uses calculus but moreover the readability is very poor with little practice problems.
