Remember how Korean LG and Samsung overtake Japanese Sony and Toshiba ? Currently, Hyundai and Kia are doing the same towards Toyota and Honda.

You are right Sam I'm a production engineer and to switch from ICE to EV you basically throw everything away in the factory ... Accept some of the programmable robots.. you just have an empty factory with its utilities... Then you have to completely refit for EV manufacturing... then you have to retrain or get new staff... So probably about three quarters of the work as if you were building a brand new EV factory.. it will cost legacy auto billions.. this is why they have lobbied to do it slowly.. unfortunately for them the customers are ordering EV anyway.. and it's very difficult for the large manufacturers to pivot quickly.. as you say especially if they are in debt & cannot get the loans... I know I'm stating the bleeding obvious... But as you say some just don't seem to get it. Why do you think Ford & others set up a separate Division for EVs .. so they can be completely disassociated from ICE both legally and financially and be able to sack employees and close ICE factories and production lines down with impunity.

Japan is like North Korea for EVs. I own a Tesla in Japan and I get so many looks and questions even from the nissan dealership reps. Japanese people want EVs, but the lack of info on EVs really hurt. What the japanese auto maker under estimate is the Tesla Japan owners club and the power of Tesla owners that hold events, rides, bbq, show and tell etc.

Japan is a lesson for individual employees too. You better learn continuously if you what to keep working.

Why is the Electric Viking such a likeable person and thoroughly enjoyable to listen to talking?

I can’t help but be reminded of the Japanese soldier Hiroo Onoda, who hid in the Phillipines jungle after the 2nd World War ended in 1945 and refused to surrender until ordered to do so by the Japanese emperor in 1974.

Kodak did pivot to digital cameras and Blockbuster did pivot to online streaming. Didn't help.

The Japanese car companies are in the same boat as other legacy ICE makers.
This boat has already hit the ICE berg and is now taking on water. It is only a matter of time before it sinks.

The other major issue is that the Japanese economy is the most indebted nation in the world with with a debt to GDP ratio of 2.49 to 1. They also have a old population reliant on social services meaning that any bail out of the auto industry would both be unlikely and unpopular.

@2:15 *Fanboi--ism* is not adequate to describe the disconnect between their _fantasy_ of the process of building *EVs* and the _reality_ of the processes and material requirements of building *EVs.*

Japan missed the internet, social media, and now EV.

"The first actual digital still camera was developed by Eastman Kodak engineer Steven Sasson in 1975."

Kodak was a leader in digital photography. They made the sensors for other companies and made the first digital SLR. Then they decided to get out of the digital camera business and concentrate on film and printing.

(Just a little history lesson.)

Your best vid yet Sam. I had decided that enough was enough with your 8-10 minutes vids that only had about 4-5 minutes of actual content but this one was pretty much perfect in that regard. They don't all have to be 20 minutes, but a 10 minute vid should be as close to 10 minutes of content as possible, even if it means splicing two together. Just my two cents in case there are others who feel the same way and you care about that. G'day mate from Canada.

If honda doesn't take EV design seriously, slaps batteries on underbelly of an ICE chassis. Just imagine the effort they put into battery cooling, motor reliability and energy efficiency!

> For maximum diversity a gas turbine and Stirling Cycle engine could be added to the Toyota hybrid with ammonia gas absorption for alternative air conditioning and propane gas mantle headlamps. A traditional teletype machine and walky talkies for communication would add a sentimental touch. And 78 rpm vinyl records for entertainment. Let's include everything Grandfather Toyoda can imagine.

Oh, well. It would just be like as if everybody else has switched over to iOS or Android phones Japan still happily uses Nokia.

Bz4x is the most underwhelming $45k EV today. Be prepared to wait 1hr to DC fast charge to 80%.

Sam I live in the US and fear for our car makers but I think you are totally right about Japan! At least Mazda, Subaru, Suzuki, and Mitsubishi are dead in the water because of their lateness to the EV race…..but the country as a whole could be dead!

Toyota’s North American production is in a nose dive. The panic within their management is palpable.

In my opinion, a proper hybrid car has NO mechanical connection between the engine and wheels. The engine ONLY turns the generator to supplement range.
