House's Law: Everybody lies.

House's Second Law: It's never lupus.

Can we take a second to appreciate what a great actor Hugh Laurie is. One of the best to ever grace television

Seeing Lin-Manuel Miranda in a bit role in House before ascending to Hamilton fame is heartwarming. Same to Andre Braugher as a bigger character before being Holt in B99. It's so lovely to look back at how they've climbed the notoriety ladder.

Damn. This went by like a breeze. That’s fantastic pacing.

"You don't like yourself. But you do admire yourself. It's all you've got, so you cling to it. You're so afraid if you change, you'll lose what makes you special. Being miserable doesn't make you better than anybody else, House. It just makes you miserable." - Wilson.

"No, I mean, why my pad? Foreman, Cameron and Chase's pads are just as convenient. But their association with you is involuntary. They're employees. I associate with you through choice and any relationship that involves choice, you have to see how far you can push before it breaks. - And one day, our friendship will break and it'll just prove your theory that relationships are conditional and you don't need human connection or deserve it or whatever goes on in that rat maze of your brain." - Wilson.

Radiohead's "No surprises" in the background during the mental institution section was pleasant. Great stuff so far!

I'm a big fan of House and of course the episode "Broken" as well, I'm literally in the middle of a re-watch of the show right now. I rarely see any analysis on Youtube of the show or this great episode. Thank you for making this.

Dude, you might not win a Pulitzer or be interviewed on 60 minutes, but you’re making a positive difference in the world by doing this show. I have also marathoned House in double digits but have so much to analyze about the substance, the relationships, the story arcs, and the characters studies I can never find the time to vocalize them as articulately as you have. I admire you. Thank you for this!!

The director of the asylum is such a powerful counterweight to House.
I loved every scene with them interacting.
It's like House is looking at a mirror image of himself,
telling him "everybody lies".

I like how the show goes off the rails after this. It's like driving down a mountain and just before that last turn you send it over the cliff. Maybe the car lands, maybe it just crashes through the front window of the person you love.

This show got me through the worst year of my life when I was suicidal. The show was so immersive it took me away from my problems. I couldn't stop watching, and I could probably say the same that I've seen most of the episodes 20 times too... with the exception of seasons 7 & 8. Seasons 1 & 2 are the best imo but I really love season 6 too for Broken. I'm a big proponent of mental health so having House face his demons said a lot to me and I enjoyed watching that process unfold. (Honorable Mention Baggage here b/c that was stellar seeing him engage in therapy.)

Fantastic video mate. I hope it gets the viewership it deserves and you continue it.

I agree. Broken would have been a good closing point for House. Unfortunately, the show went on and House's progress was eventually unraveled.

I'm not embarrassed to say that as an aimless young adult, I modeled myself after House. It didn't win me more friends (nothing had before anyway), but I liked it. More importantly, I liked myself.

As I grew older, I recognized there were a lot of problems with basing your personality after a fictional character, especially one who is as toxic as House, so I changed and I grew up some more. But the core of that person, the relentless pursuit of truth, the refusal to let stupidity win, the irreverence in the face of defeat, and the ability to let go of pain and move on, that has been the best parts of me. And I learned that from this series.

Thanks for this analysis. Hope to see the rest of it soon.

I had never once watched an episode of House, but it's one of my wife's favorite shows. So I ordered the whole 8 seasons as a cheap box set from walmart at a stupid good price. I was in love from episode one, and binged the series while waiting for the arrival of our first daughter. So far the first part of this essay is great. Can't wait to listen to the other 5.

Halfway through this part, and it's incredible analysis so far. House was a cultural juggernaut that seems to have been more-or-less forgotten since it ended, where other shows of the era, whether good or bad, seem to persist in our shared memory. It deserves a full "warts-and-all" retrospective. Can't wait for parts 2-6.

03:05  "in the finale house fakes his death and comes back to life, just like you know who" - Mind immediately goes to Batman despite of everything that's been said up to that point.

I've seen that episode of house waaaay before learning of Lin-Manuel Miranda, so seeing him at 8:17 caught me off guard.

I appreciate "Broken". If only for how [relatively] realistic the madhouse is portrayed. Mine was less luxurious but the important part, how House feels there, is shown almost flawlessly. First, he lusts for freedom, then understands that the more he resists the longer is his stay, which is the cornerstone of being admitted. The phases he goes through there - I know them too well. And his conversations with the doc are very authentic. Also, he didn't have to learn that mental illnesses are very real the hard way, but it worked dramatically, it was a shocking lesson for the audience. Which, certainly, didn't make everyone happy since a good portion of people can't empathize and still thinks that a sick mind can be cured with a walk in the park, optimism, and some labour. Can't say I blame them, it's hard to imagine unless you're sick yourself or have sick relatives. The creators did their research, captured the feel of it all. And you did a great job dissecting it.
