Pipilla lace in Omodos and Koilani - Promotional film

This short film was created by Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO, the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, the UNESCO Chair - University of Nicosia and the Mediazone - University of Nicosia, with the aim to encourage local and foreign visitors to discover and experience the rich traditions and customs practiced and celebrated in the island's villages and cities.

The fine pipilla needlepoint lace is a remarkable example of folk craftmanship of Cypriot women. It is made by hand using only a needle and thread, with tighly or lightly tied knots that are tied in the air, without the use of a cushion. Today, the craft of pipilla lace-making, the well-know knot-stitch velonokompos, is preserved mainly in the communities of Koilani, Lapithos and Omodos.
